Iv finally got a date for my ct scan on 13th July it's of the stomach and pelvic and I'm having injection can anybody tell me about this and it says on the letter I have to go on my period my periods come and go when ever as I have a coil ? And it doesn't say anything about eating or drinking and what do I need to expect I'm guessing it won't go near the other top half ?

Hi Ella

I had a CT scan of abdomen and pelvis recently, it was fine!

The injection is contrast dye so as to distinguish the blood vessels and aid interpretation of the images. I had a cannula fitted as the dye needs to enter at a precise time whilst you are about to enter the scanner. 4hrs beforehand it was no food for me water only or black tea. The scanner bed that you lie on is on rails and depending on what part of your body is being scanned slides in and out of the scanner all pre-programmed to do so (as is the voice that tells you to hold your breath). So it would only be the area of interest scanned. As it is X rays the radiographer technicians/nurse are in a side room!

All in all about 5mins to fit and test the cannula and 10mins or so of actual scanning.

You can see pictures of CT scanners online. It is essentially a coil that rotates at high speed so is a little noisy and you slide in and out of the middle of it.

I would certainly contact them to seek confirmation of any concerns.

Good luck

I had a CT Scan a few years ago and there's nothing to be concerned about really. The injection is a dye that shows up on the images more clearer on the screen that the clinician is looking at. As for the coil issue my advice is to ask them and see what they say. Also for the period situation I don't think it would be any problems as long as you make them aware of this. You Will be fine. You may feel abit of a warm feeling around the areas due to the dye going around the body But this will clear through your bodily functions so nothing to worry about. Take care.

Hi Ella1992 I am like you I get anxious about medical procedures, and always think the worst. But on the other hand I want to know why I am getting these problems and maybe get the help I need. A lot of people are nervous and the medical staff understand that. I would contact them and get the answers you need. Write a list of all the questions so you do not miss something. Then you can prepare yourself.

Good luck and I wish you all the best x
