I suffer from what seems to be a gas buildup during the night which is causing me to reflux. As it is not your typical GERD, PPI'S don't work for me. I have tried so many natural products, changing diet etc. without success. I would really appreciate any advice?

Gas and reflux at night
I've found simethicone good for gas, and calcium carbonate good for reflux. They're both over the counter, though, so I'm assuming you've tried them already.
Abdominal hernia gives the same symptoms as IBS, a hernia doesn't have to be pushing through, they can be there for years causing problems.
What time do you eat your evening meal? Do you drink alcohol?
I finish my evening meal 3-4 hours before lying down also because I have to take my thyroxine well away from food and drinks and I have a glass of red wine about once or twice a week.
To guard against the reflux at night, have you tried raising the head of your bed by 20cm using bed risers? This puts you at an angle whilst sleeping to help keep stomach contents in place. Also having gravity might help the gas to escape downwards rather than up.
Hi Carri3, I have been having the very same issues. Been on and off PPI’s, tried every herbal remedy I heard about and doing my best with my diet. When I do get up and start moving around during the day I hardly experience this issue. I did some test again last year and they saw no issues. Really hoping for some advice too.
I think you may be correct that it's linked to hypothyroidism, you may have slow gut transit which can cause a build up of gas , I have the same problem at night but only in my lower gut. Can I ask how long have you been diagnosed with hypothyroidism? My GP has prescribed me some levothyoxine but I'm terrified to take them in case it makes my gut transit too fast, I have pain 24/7 keeps me awake at night. Do you have any side effects from the thyroxine?
I've been hypo and on thyroxine for many years edwangy, You could post your second question on the Thyroid Network here.
I think you may be right about the slow gut transit/motility I might ask my Doctor to prescribe a prokinetic.
Hi Carri3 , as far as slow transit is concerned i find lots of walking during the day helps. I have a hiatus hernia and am on omoprezole. The consultant my friend saw, who also has a hiatus hernia, said to use gaviscon advanced. This i find so much better than the normal gaviscon. i take two teaspoons full before bed and it works like a dream. Couldnt get through the night without this. hope that helps. worth a try.
Thyroid meds dont work that quickly and it takes weeks to see an improvement so I doubt they would make anyone's gut transit go very quickly like a laxative. It takes about 4-6 weeks to see a change in bloodwork. Now that's not to say a person may not experience side effects. It's all individual.

Have you ever look into dysbiosis, sibo, h plyori or low acid? These can cause reflux and are common in hypothyroid patients
Another avenue that I have been exploring for myself lately is B1 and its role in digestion.
Hi Imaaan, I would like to know how you got on with exploring vit B1, did you have any success?
It made an amazing difference in my energy and digestion health, thanks and praise belong to God. I had to switch to another type and brand though because the Now B1 gave me reflux and it irritated my stomach. If you look up EOnutrition on YT , you'll see some inspiring stories. From the B1 Facebook group, I learnt the importance of taking it with co factors.
