I'm just doing a bit of research on Alosetron. I searched on here, but no posts came up.

Is this not a common drug to treat IBS-D?

Do GP's in the UK not offer it.

I've been on a few tricyclic antidepressants but I don't get any benefits from them. Mirtazapine was helpful, but the weight gain was brutal.

I hear it works by slowing down the movement of stools through the bowel, thereby reducing diarrhea. If you're struggling with stress management this blog might be a big help! casadesante.com/blogs/diges...

I have done research into IBS and in my notes I identified the following regarding Alosetron (it appears not to be available in the UK due to adverse effects):

– has been shown to improve abdominal pain, discomfort, and bloating in female IBS-D patients

– careful prescribing of 0.5 mg BID helps avoid serious side effects of the drug including severe constipation and ischemic colitis: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

– Alosetron is not available in the UK – it was withdrawn because of severe constipation (in 25% of people taking alonsetron) :

Have you tried any probiotics such as Alflorex for your IBS-D. This one has been scientifically studied for IBS.

I'm currently on hold waiting to get a GP appointment. Had yellow water poo for 3 days now. Never had that before.

I do take probiotics but not regularly I admit. I haven't seen any benefit from Bio Kult in the past. I have Gut Mate and Symbiotics.

I've taken some Enterosgel 2 hours ago for the first time. Not helping.

Oh dear. That's not good.

I have tried many probiotics over the years, but Alflorex worked best for me.

You may want to ask your GP for a test for BAM (bile acid malabsorption). This is a different condition to IBS with similar symptoms.

However, for IBS, the normal route is to try something like Alflorex first. This really needs to be trialled every day for 3 months. Precision Biotics, the manufacturer, have a support line so they can help you through the process. Failing that a dietician referral to take you through the FODMAP elimination and reintroduction diet. If neither of those help at all, you could be talking about BAM.

Still on hold... I did think that was a possibility. Also some kind of food poisoning maybe? Hope I don't get fobbed off with wait and see.

Just to update. Doc said I have gastroenteritis. I'm not too sure about that, as I don't have any vomiting or fever, and my stomach cramps aren't very painful. He said I have to give it a week, take Diaoralyte and if no improvement he will to a poo test on Monday.

Anyway, day 4 now. Took 2 doses of Enterosgel yesterday (gag) and todays poop was a bit better than water.

berberine with meals is good for firming up stools and also an antibacterial so it is good at removing harmful bacteria in the gut. I would try that in any case and helps with weight loss by making sugar up and downs less bad. Take with a B1 supplement if dealing with anxiety.
