Is it just discomfort or pain and the occasional spasm ?You might find taking Buscopan an hour before bed helps if you can take it .
A heat pad or wheat bag on your lower back can also help soothe the whole stomach and back area.
Ginger tea , the three ginger by Pukka helps me too , but if you are on any other medication you need to check that you can have ginger with it . I have a cup after lunch and dinner and if I feel uncomfortable it's nice before bed with a little honey .
I suffered with IBS pain mainly in the very early hours of the morning. I worked out this is when the bowel is at its most active preparing for a BM in the morning.
You may be suffering from visceral hypersensitivity (functional abdominal pain) - there is info about it here:
It is where the brain interprets the normal activity of the bowel as pain - this is due to a wearing down of neurons in pain control centres of the brain which can be caused by PTSD, neglect or abuse in childhood, extreme stressful events etc. The first line treatment is nerve pain agents such as low dose amitriptyline. There is a theory that being on something like amitriptyline for 6-12 months can help the pain control centre neurons to regenerate. Note that amitriptyline can cause constipation, which would be no good for you. I couldn't tolerate these. You could try Linaclotide which is for IBS-C only. It calms intestinal nerves to reduce pain. It reduced my pain by 50% to 60%. When I added in Alflorex probiotic, the pain reduced to zero. In fact, I would try Alflorex first, since you may not need the medication. For me the pain only comes back when I am challenging myself with new foods. Alflorex has been scientifically studied for IBS.
