Keep reading that eating peanuts is good for IBS but if I eat more than a few they play havoc with my guts. Anyone else experience this?

OK, thanks. I'll get some.

think peanuts are not a nut but a legume , all nuts have phytic acid in them , soaking them in water for about an hour should make them more digestible , but personally I find them hard to digest regardless x

cashews are often a trigger for IBS.

Yes, I can't eat too many of them either (IBS-D) But I found out something. In small amounts they are LOW Fodmap. In larger amounts they are HIGH Fodmap! I can say that the amount I eat definitely makes a difference. So I can get away with eating something like a heaped dessertspoonful but no more. Maybe you could try with small amounts and see if they're ok?

I had a flare after eating about twice or a little bit more of that amount but was fine on the dessertspoonful. Difficult to do, as peanuts are tempting to eat more of.

Have you tried Macadamia nuts? They're supposed to be ok for IBS as they are low Fodmap. But again amounts might matter.

That is what I found too. So weird but definitely true for me. Small amount of pineapple is ok if I have a bowl full im gone..... low fodmap with tiny amount. High fodmap with large.

Love chocolate coated peanuts, very difficult to eat just a few, so not buying anymore.

Raw peanuts are awful in any event...However I can eat peanut butter with no ill effect,in fact my go to snack on polystyrene(aka rice cakes)

Peanuts are low FODMAP so not an immediate red-flag. But they are part of the pea family rather than the nut family.

Peas on the other hand are red for FODMAPS - chickpeas, garden peas, sugar snap peas etc. All of which play havoc with me.

It could simply be that although they are low in FODMAPS they are a trigger for you.

I thought chickpeas were low fodmap.

definitely red - although my app says amber for canned, but experience says don’t touch either for me.

It's weird, but peas of any kind, fresh, raw, frozen, are awful for my guts in any amount. But when I eat sugar snap peas (steamed) in any amount at all, and even if I ate them every day I am fine! Those are high Fodmap too,

Chickpeas, I have to be careful with. I have to peel them first, get those fibery skins off them, then I can eat about 1-2 dessertspoons (sometimes!)

No idea where you heard they were good for IBS, i avoid all nuts! Irritants to the gut

I heard that nuts are bad for diverticulitis, and seeds. Just thought I would mention it

Peanuts and other nuts and seeds are awful for diverticulitis. My son has had several bouts which lasted 3 weeks or more in sheer agony after eating a few nuts and on one occasion some Reese's peanut butter cups

Your son may beg to differ, but that's no longer seen as valid: health.clevelandclinic.org/...

I would only ever eat roasted peanuts, and whenever I do, I really chew them properly. I don't know if roasting makes them a bit more easy to digest? I seem to be ok with small amounts of peanut butter too, but like the plain kind with no additives, just peanuts and salt basically.

I was okay on a few brazil nuts too. Just about 4 or 6. Those never gave me any trouble (chewed well) But one day I had a bit of a flare up after I'd eaten them the previous day. Not sure though what caused the flare up, may not have been the 4 brazil nuts.

A high fibre diet is supposed to be good for you, but a lot of IBS-D sufferers would disagree! Unfortunately, although certain foods may help or hinder the majority, there will always be a minority (sometimes quite a significant one) for whom they will have the opposite effect; you can see this with some drugs, where the side effects include both diarrhoea and constipation!

This is not surprising given the complexity of the digestive system and the fact that everybody’s gut flora is different. Certainly worth trying different foods, particularly where there is some evidence of better tolerance, but don’t be surprised if they don’t always work for you.

I can also raw almonds with no ill effect

Luisa22 profile image

Raw almonds...nope for me. But I worked out it was the skins that caused trouble. So now I blanch them and take skins off, then toast them, and they are fine for me that way.

Never had any problems with nuts of any kind

All nuts and seeds are high fibre. So amount and how much you chew them up will effect the digestive system. Nut butters vary in quality and the ones that have oil floating on top are best quality and the most pure.

I've also had some bad times trying to eat Tahini which I love. It's such a smooth paste too, so I can't think why. I really really miss that.
