IBS after eating evening meal

I have been a coeliac for many years, when I was diagnosed I thought my diarrhoea would cease. I also have trouble with an over active bladder. My diarrhoea seems to arrive about 4 hours after my evening meal. It can happen up to 4 times a week then perhaps nothing the next week. I get very painful cramps. Nothing seems to lesson the pain and Imodium doesn’t have any effect at all, I just have to get rid of it. It can pass in a few hours and next day I’m fine again. Does any else have it like this?

Maybe you suffer from constipation in combination with overflow diarrhoea? This means that there's still fecal material in your bowels or you could suffer from slow transit constipation caused by gas in your intestines for example. Have you already been seeing a gastroenterologist because of the problems with your guts? Pressure from the distented bowels could be the cause of an overactive bladder. It's at least what I think is happening in my belly/abdomen. I have to urinate also quit often and do think it's related to my functional bowel problems. And I think it takes about 3 to 4 hours for something you eat/ingest to pass to the end of our small intestines, the lower right corner of the abdomen where the caecum is located and where the ascending colon starts.

yes I do agree my bladder problems do come from bowel. I also can also go for days without a bowel movement.

Yes, I always have to pee more when my gut starts flaring up. I've never been able to understand why. I always thought -if more water is coming out via urine, why are my stools still loose? That comes and goes for me.

I'm not coeliac, and wheat, gluten etc give me no problems, though I don't eat too much of gluten containing foods.

But I can empathise because I can sometimes get a bit of an upset about 4 hours after dinner. Sometimes it's just a mild discomfort not even pain, and doesn't last long, maybe 30 minutes or an hour then goes away. It can just feel as though my colon is stretched. I think it's wind moving around. Passing wind can be a relief.

But on a few occasions I have had an episode of diarrhea. Usually starting about 10 30, and making me feel rotten so I daren't go to bed until about 5am, having had to go to the loo maybe 5 times. Whenever that happens it's just the start of a flare up which usually lasts me a couple of days and though it does settle down, my gut doesn't feel great for maybe a week or two after it.

I have not been able to connect what I had eaten with one of these upsets. Or what I had eaten earlier in the day, or the previous day. I only ever eat what I know to be "safe" for me. Plus I usually get little warning. I can have felt quite well that day and had a normal bowel movement that morning.

As Meleber states you may have severe constipation which is causing overflow diarrhea. What is your fibre intake like? With being coeliac you may be missing out on some of the fibre that you get from for instance whole wheat bread. However, there are many gluten- free high fibre options out there. Let me know if you want further information about this.

Additionally, it might be best to discuss these symptoms with your GP. They may want to run some further tests since your initial diagnosis was a while ago. They also shouldn't be leaving you to live with these symptoms - they should be offering help.
