Hi all. Has anyone any thoughts on drinking kefir or the kefir yogurts

Just had an interesting conversation with my next door neighbour and he feels this has really helped him.

Your thoughts and experience with this for ibsd would be most welcome.

Thanks all just seem to be having a bad day today and Golden Wedding Anniversary tomorrow. On saying that family gathering on Saturday, everyone will say I am stressed but I am feeling very calm and in my own home near the bathroom so able to enjoy the day .

Sorry you didn't need to know all that a bit irrelevant

Thanks Pollyboo

Hiya Pollyboo, I suffer from IBS-D a lot too. Went through an awful flare last week and still am a bit. I have recently started using Goats Milk Kefir made here in Wales. Will let you know how I get on. I'm desperately hoping it'll help because the symptoms are stressing me out so much.

Hi Pollyboo. wishing you a lovely day for your Golden Wedding anniversary! Wow....50 years. Bless you both.

At home and not far from the bathroom sounds ideal. Stick to your "safe" foods and drinks. If in doubt have hard boiled eggs and white rice! No matter what delicacies may be on offer.

But cake....well, I can usually eat a bit of cake and be OK. I have IBS-D too.

It's worth doing that. I imagine today your gut may be a bit nervy about tomorrow even though you feel calm in yourself, so that's probably why your day hasn't been as good....plus the heat? If you're in UK it's been super hot. 30 C in the shade in my garden today!

Have a lovely day tomorrow xx

Hi Luisa22, thank you for your good wishes. Yes I am on the UK and it has been hot I am on the coast so a bit of a sea breeze. Looking forward to the celebrations now. My freezer is full of my home baking all ready but never sure if you have enough food. Thank you once again Pollyboo

It's great that you have everything ready in your freezer. Good thinking ahead. So things won't be too hectic tomorrow, and stress reducing hopefully. Have a lovely day!

Happy Golden Wedding Anniversary and I hope all goes well on Saturday. ❤️

Regarding the kefir, I tried it once but it went straight through me, never tried it again!

Thank you Maureen for your best wishes. Had a really lovely day. Haven't yet tried the kefir as my thoughts were going it would make the diarrhoea worse Pollyboo

I understand fears about kefir making diarrhoea worse, but it might be worth being aware that there may well be longer term benefits of kefir in assisting the gut biome to become more healthy. Kefir and other foods supporting good gut biome are worth trying.

Making your own kefir is easy and cheap.

Yes I use Biotiful which is really nice - some are horrible. I do think it does help. I would use a plain one rather than the flavours. Enjoy your party.

I have been making my own milk kefir for about a month now. However, I suffer from constipation rather than IBS-D. I started drinking kefir for the probiotic benefits, and I *think* it might be helping the constipation, but it's hard to tell because I go through phases anyway. I haven't suffered any ill effects that I've noticed. The homemade kefir is quite different from store-bought, however, and the store-bought variety doesn't have nearly as many varieties of probiotics in it. I actually like the taste and find it refreshing but it is definitely not for everyone. Can you get the grains from your neighbour to make your own, or does he buy his kefir?

I have started using Bimuno digestive supplement which is really helping to keep my bowels moving and reduce constipation.

Hi Pollyboo, I have been using Chuckling Goats Kefir for the last 2-3 weeks and it has been a game changer (so far!). At first I tried the full daily dose and as Maureen said it went straight through me too with terrible IBSD symptoms. I then read the instructions properly for this specific product and saw that for people with sensitive bowels the recommendation is to try 1 tablespoon each morning for a week and then gradually increase every week if tolerated e.g. 2 tablespoons the following week o reduce to a teaspoon if needed. I tolerate this much better, so far my symptoms of gas and bloating have almost disappeared after 5 long years. I still have very loose stools, sometimes 3-5 a day but it is such early days that I am hopeful (fingers crossed) that this too will slowly get better. The company do say to give it a 9 week trial to see if it helps so my advice would be to start any kefir regime when you can spend a few days or ideally a week at home (in case your symptoms get worse at first) and then give it time to work as it can take awhile to work. I hope you can get some relief.

It seems that the make up of the microbiome is probably very important to health let alone IBS. Afaiu, Prebiotics like Bimuno (cheaper than the Chuckling goat product) help feed the good bacteria. Fermented foods provide a good source of good bacteria and Kefir is one of those. There is a school of thought that A1 milk is more proinflammatory than A2 and goats milk is naturally A2.

I personally find Symprove helpful but it is not cheap and I know others have not found benefit, there are some promising papers supporting it.

The work of people like Tim Spector is worth following and his pod cast with Rongan Chattergee is very good.

Avoiding Ultra processed foods is really important and I think many are starting to see benefits with a low carb approach.

The podcast series by Dr Chris and Dr Zand is really interesting.

I hope you enjoy the celebration.
