IBS/WEIGHT LOSS

I suffer from IBS and have also gained weight during lock down. I am looking for a dietitian to be able to set up a weight loss diet plan to take into consideration the FODMAP diet and the foods that I like. Basically I want a tailored made weight loss diet plan. I don't know if I could get this through the NHS in Scotland where I live or if I can get this online. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hi

Speak to your GP and they should refer you to a dietician through the NHS. This is definitely available for free in Scotland.

I haven't gone down this road myself yet but know several people who have. You may have to wait for appointment though.

Hope that helps.

Hi as Lorna said your g.p can point you in the right direction. I'm not sure if like everything else the service may be delayed though but I'm sure the g.p can advise, good luck.

i am lucky as i lost weight in lockdown due to going out for walks and being able to eat regularly and making home cooked meals, working shifts means i may only eat once a day sometimes not at all and that's usually junk food for quickness as i only have 1/2 an hour allotted for my break

I lost a lot of weight initially. Now I gain a couple of Kgs back but when flaring lose it again. I was a big girl and did have it to lose.

Speak to your GP you may or may not get help. Dietician are few and far between on the NHS. The GP told me that the NHS only refer when you are a cancer patient, elderly or extremely over weight.

Not sure if you're under a gastro team at the hospital but you would have better luck going through your consultant

Although not a dietition, I was put on the low FODMAP diet myself. Before you do it (hopefully this wont come too late), consider - 1. personally my intolerances became extreme after doing the diet and now i cant have any gluten at all. 2. when you reintroduce foods, its not just about the food itself or the quantity, you have to take into consideration other factors, like if you altered, how much water you had, if you had anti bloating foods with your meal without realising it, therefore naturally making you thing you can handle a certain food sometimes but not at other times (otherwise, this would get seriously confusing, like it was for me) and thirdly, the diet is Seriously restrictive. Can help, but personally, it wanted me to take and keep too much out as soon as i reintroduced things i was in pain, so it suggested that my diet will always have to be heavily restricted. I'm just sharing my experience so you can take it into consideration. My advice, ...introduce anti-bloating foods to every meal consistently, and see its effect, before or maybe whilst putting your body through all this, then you can make more informed decisions.. I hope you feel better soon.

Oh, ...i can help you with a diet plan if you havent found a dietition yet, but as i said, i'm not a dietition. They just put me straight on the FODMAP diet and I had to figure out most of it myself. I can try to help you do the same as me, if you like, we can go on this journey of a better digestive system together?!
