Dried fruit and stomach problems

Just wondering if dried fruit like sultanas/raisins make anyone else’s stomach problems worse? I love dried fruit and enjoy eating it so would rather not cut it out my diet but I’m unsure as to whether or not it’s worsening my symptoms. Some times when I eat them I feel fine and other times I can feel really cramped up but I don’t know whether there’s a correlation or not

Heard dried fruits tend to ferment; so avoid if this is a problem; fresh fruits I find better

Yes I find when I eat things like dried fruit and raisins they make me poop more.

I cannot eat these either they definitely aggravate my gut ! X

Ericaxmai the sulfur dioxide used in dried fruit and other foods causes loss of thiamine. Thiamine is critical for proper function of the brain and the vagus nerve connecting the gut to the brain. Although the second link focuses on SIBO it also applies to IBS and contains visuals of the vagus nerve's connections in the gut for a better understanding. Searching on "IBS thiamine" will expand the subject. In addition to thiamine found in foods are three forms that offer heightened absorption and other benefits TTFD, benfotiamine and sulbutiamine. The enzymes created by magnesium are needed to activate thiamine so a deficiency could also result in a thiamine deficiency. In addition to sulfur dioxide are other anti thiamine factors depleting thiamine some of which are found in the last link. Always consult your health care professional before using any supplement.

Since doing the fodmap diet I've recognised dried food as a trigger for me. I think it's something to do with fermented foods. I'm gutted as like you I love it. I will try to introduce it slowly in a few months though.

Hi Ericaxmai,

I have this same issue too. It's been a problem for years. I've finally whittled it down to realising that my body will only accept it if I put it on top of my cereal. ... Which is predominantly some type of granola.

I spoke to the pain clinic about this. I was told that it's the preservatives on the fruit that causes a painful reaction. Also, that some fruits and vegetables have higher levels of Sulphur than others, which is why I get acute painful reactions when I eat them.

I now limit my intake to a maximum of 2 days a week. In total I will have around half a handful of 2 types mixed together on my granola. This has made the problem a lot better.

Hope this helps. 😍

Dried fruit is not recommended on the fodmap diet which seems to help many ibs sufferers
