Hello everybody, I am new to this forum and would really appreciate some help and advice please. I am due to have a colonoscopy just over a weeks time, and getting a wee bit anxious. I have atrial fibrillation (have had two ablations for this over the last twelve months), and a bit worried about the possible effects that the bowel prep Moviprep could have on my heart arrhythmia. My gastroenterologist doesn’t seem at all concerned.

I am trying very hard not to get too stressed about all this, I live alone so do not have anyone to bounce ideas around regarding how best to get through the Moviprep’journey’. Will also be having the procedure done without sedation (due to the fact that I have no one who can stay with me overnight afterwards),I understand that I will therefore be having Entonox along with some other form of pain relief .

Any guidance and advice would be most gratefully appreciated, thank you.

Shirley

I I've been through the whole thing there nothing to worry about .the moviprep will do the job ..stay close to the loo plus follow the instructions to the letter .Honestly you will be fine .I didn’t have the sedation it was my choice its was all over in 15 mins , I did have a wife with me ... I was absolutely fine and all was well as yours will be .please try not to get anxious as it will make it worse.

Andy you will be fine .

Thank you Andy,I will let you know how it all goes. I emailed my EP ( who did my ablations), and he phoned me this morning, he did say that Moviprep can cause an arrhythmia, but try to keep well hydrated ! Trying really hard not to get stressed about all this, thank you again for your kind words and support, it certainly helps.

You can check with your cardiologist for some extra reassurance. I have had colonoscopies both with and without sedation. Without sedation was OK. If there is discomfort, you can always ask for some sedation and let the hospital worry about how to get you home. I am in the same situation as it is very difficult to find someone to accompany me. My son will do it, but it means a 5 hour drive here and a 5 hour drive back home for him. xx

Yes, I really feel for you. I have friends nearby, but my hospital is about 35 miles away and my friends don't like to drive in NYC. I have a funny feeling that hospitals do have a plan for the situation where no one comes to take you home, but they sort of don't talk or tell you about them.

My older sister has a-fib too and has had a recent colonoscopy. And it went fine.

Hello. Decgav66,Thank you for you reply, that has made me feel a little bit less anxious. I have spoken to a nurse at the colonoscopy unit about my concerns but she was, well useless, just said ‘I can’t advise you speak to your consultant’! I have spoken with the consultant’s secretary, now awaiting a response back. I have also contacted my cardiac consultant, don’t know what more I can do. I suppose it will be left up to me to make the decision, the nurse at the colonoscopy unit certainly gave me that impression! I think all I’m looking for is some guidance as to how I can deal with the situation should my arrhythmia become worse whilst I’m using the Moviprep. I know you have to keep well hydrated to help prevent issues with dehydration so fingers crossed 🤞 I suppose.

I’m sorry seem to have gone on a bit now, thank you for reading this far,!

Take care,

Shirley
