It seems like every time I eat something with wheat in it I get nausea heartburn and indigestion I try to maintain a gluten free diet but today I had a small piece of battenburg cake a few hours later felt sick heartburn indigestion I have had two home kits to test for coeliac but both negative does anybody else suffer with this

You do know there is a difference between gluten intolerance and coeliac disease. You fall into a select group of animal who know what they shouldn't eat but do it anyway, humans! Been there many times and faced the resulting consequences!I'm a little older and I hope wiser now and can look all day at what I can't eat and walk away. The brain has been indelibly imprinted certain foods are poison to me. There is nothing like consequence and learn, been around since the inception of humans. We're are just very slow learners when tempted.
I would suggest you get properly tested in the hope you know exactly what the cause is. There are many causes with similar symptoms. With luck you may get a diagnosis other than IBS, I hope so, as IBS is what is left over when the Dr's have run out of diagnoses or ideas and only something I would wish on my worst enemy!
Meantime no matter how good it looks, don't touch it, if you know it causes problems.
I know temptation can be a bastard to deal with but with determination you can do anything you set your mind to. IBS is kind of like being an alcoholic, one forbidden bite and your back to the start.My diet has to contend with IBS, HBP, CKD, extremely high cholesterol, diabetes T2 , riddled with osteoarthritis pain and to top it all off an unhealthy dose of reflux to keep me on my toes. Yes my diet is crap but I'm managing and reasonably comfortable.
The brain does reeducate itself into recognizing you don't need certain foods any more and the cravings dry up. I'm nothing special, just like everyone else, dealing with what comes my way, the best I can. It doesn't sound like you have a lot of health issues to contend with so it will be do able for you.
Ultimately the choice is, do you want to live this way or not. When you have had a neck full of stomach problems and flare ups, I'll bet you will find the determination to succeed.
It may be that you are reacting to the fructan FODMAPs found in wheat rather than gluten itself or being coeliac. The only way to test for coeliac is to consume gluten regularly - your doctor will tell you how long for and then have the test done. However, considering that you know that you don't get on with wheat, I'm not sure what the point of the test is.
Why do you need a test? If you react to it, then don't eat it. Your test has effectively been elimination and reintroduction. You eliminated it, you were fine, you introduced it and you weren't. That is called FODMAP testing. There are no tests for food intolerance apart from elimination and reintroduction. I can't see the point of a ceoliac test if you are going to eliminate wheat anyway. Otherwise you will put yourself through weeks of diarrhea consuming wheat just to get the ceoliac test done.
I agree with xjrs. I have been told I have IBS and suffer from acid reflux. So I was prescribed medication. But a couple of months ago I was advised to try eliminating FODMAPS. I have eaten foods containing wheat all my life (now over 70) and thought I was on a healthy diet but still suffered from chest pain and excess bloating. Medication only treats the symptoms not the cause. So far, it seems to be working for me but if I do take a fancy to something that contains a FODMAP sugar (fructose, etc.) then I get indigestion with chest pain and bloating.
If you are not normally eating gluten - the coeliac test will be negative - you have to keep eating it unfortunately for the test to show anything - before the test. Then stop again after and wait for results.
Yes you may just be intolerant but that can be quite bad too - if you did eat Gluten before the coeliac test and it was negative then that must be right. So still best to avoid - if it affects you . x
