I have started the low fodmap diet about 6 months ago, I have bought all gluten free foods, making foods from scratch & gone lactose free & so far its been great, I have gone from being on the toilet ALL night every 2 or 3 days to only had a bad stomache every 7 or 10 days but i don't know where i go from here, is it the dairy or the wheat that i shouldn't have?
New to fodmap diet.: I have started the low... - IBS Network
New to fodmap diet.
I'm so pleased you are noticing a difference - I think the low fodmap diet saved my social life. Although I reintroduced a lot of the higher fodmap foods I haven't been able to reintroduce wheat, yeast or cows milk yet - I think a high dairy, wheat and sugar diet might have been the cause of my problem in the first place. Are you also taking a pre and pro biotic. Prebiotics are soluble fibre which compensate for the low fodmaps and feed the good bacteria in the gut - like psyllium husk. Probiotics are doses of the good bacteria to repair the gut flora - like Zenflore, Biokult etc. and you can also use Kefir and fermented stuff or Yakult type drinks if you can tolerate them. I also had to cut down my sugar intake quite a lot before I saw a big difference. You are on the right track and your gut is telling you so.
This sounds great. Did you do this under the guidance from a dietitian via a GP referral? The reason I ask is that you eliminate all FODMAPs for 2 weeks, then reintroduce them one by one with gaps in between so you know what is upsetting you. This is best done under dietitian guidance.
Hi there
I'm so pleased you are much better.
I started the diet on 13 January 2020 and haven't looked back, you feel you have a life back. I'm still keeping a food/drink diary now as it's proving to be very beneficial. I can eat some onion and garlic and the way I found out was buying some ready made Vegan burgers (I'm a Vegan) that have onion and garlic in them, no reaction at all.
I make my own spelt sourdough as I cannot tolerate yeast, I found this out through a Nutritionist before I started the low fodmap diet. The Nutritionist also said I had a high sensitivity to barley, peas and gluten but I can tolerate spelt sourdough, I eat it every day. I've tested the yeast, barley and peas and she was spot on,I cannot eat them. The worst symptoms for me are nausea and diarrhoea. I stupidly thought I'd have another go at eating mango, wish I hadn't bothered as so far I had nausea yesterday afternoon until late evening and tummy gripes last evening through to today as well.
My Dietician knew very little about the management stage of the diet so I've just got used to what I can and can't eat, there are quite a few high fodmap foods I can eat now. Apart from the very rare occasion I do make all my own food.
Wishing you the very best of luck.
Alicia
