Fodmap Diet

Hi,

I am currently undergoing tests/scans to see if I have IBS-C. Each day I'm in pain especially on my left hand side. As the NHS seems a little slow with sorting me out I'm wanting to take matters into my own hands. I have been looking at the Fodmap diet the only problem is that there are so many guides out there and some contradicting each other that I don't know where to start.

Does anyone have a pdf of what foods I should have / not have, that everyone is following?

Thanks for all your help x

Thanks

Hi Muddy1980, The FODMAP diet should only be followed under the supervision of a Registered Dietitian that's been trained in the FODMAP diet and supporting people with IBS. It's also what doctors refer to as 'second line' treatment, so should only be considered once IBS has been officially diagnosed and other treatment options haven't been successful at reducing symptoms.

Hi,

I understand, thanks I was just hoping to reduce my symptoms sooner rather than later so I can stop taking all these painkillers. Thanks anyway x

Hi Muddy . Try eating soluble fibre only , have a look at helpforibs.com . It has a list of good foods for ins .also bad foods . Lots of good info . Ladies name is Heather who has overcome ins with this diet . I have found it very helpful . Try and reduce stress levels as well because it does have major effects on ins sufferers . Hope this helps . Take care .

I follow the Fodmap diet through a dietician but this alone does not help constipation. You need to take a high amount of magnesium citrate or oxide. About 800 to 1200mg. I have had Ibs c almost my whole life and am now in my fifties. This is the best natural supplement to take for this condition and I have tried many. Even my consultant recommended it. I take it every day. You must take it on an empty stomach just before bed with lots of water. I would start with a high dose initially just to clear you out. Even if it means taking a few capsules. I sometimes take 6 200mg capsules. Capsules are the best not tablets and it has to be citrate or oxide as these are the ones that work for constipation. There is a lot of information about constipation and magnesium on the internet. The ones I take are either Now foods Magnesium citrate, Solgar Magnesium Citrate or Life extensions. I get mine from the US on a site called iHerb, but you can get them on Amazon. There are other magnesium oxide products specifically for colon cleansing called Mag 07, Colosan and Oxypowder. They are a bit expensive but are amazing. I use these in between. No cramps no bloating, just relief. You can get these on Amazon as well.

Before trying any supplement, everyone should first check with their Doctor's or Pharmacist to see if you can take Magnesium or any other product such as "Colon cleansers" these can be dangerous as our colons and bodies are very smart, there is no "toxic or fecal waste" in our colons, as they shed cells every day, and clean themselves. Reputable websites such as Mayo clinic, will advise more about this. There is no s scientific research to support "colon irrigation" or "cleansing" and can do more harm than good. Also, if someone has an underlying health disorder, magnesium or colon cleansers may not be the answer, especially for those with impaired kidney function. Please check with your Doctor or gastro on any supplement you start, as if someone is currently taking medications such as Warfarin or blood thinners there can be an interaction. ☺🌸
