Mid to upper back ache

Hi I have been diagnosed with ibs this week. One of my symptoms is a knawing back ache. I was wondering if anyone else gets this. It almost feels like it’s it’s being eaten away and feels very stiff. It is located mainly in the area of my lungs. I have an appointment for a chest X-ray in 33 weeks.

Hey. Sorry to hear your pain. I’ve IBS too and also have had a gnawing pain for about 15 years on my back. At first I thought it was my lung and was so panic stricken as I used to smoke. I gave up smoking, had xrays but nothing was found. I continue to get a gnawing pain to my left hand side just under my bra strap. About two years ago I had further xrays and lung tests but apparently I was healthy! They sent me to have my spine looked at and tell me I’ve osteoporosis/arthritis on one of two areas midway back that could be causing the referred pain. I lift weights and take calcium for bones so I’m not worried really. However I think it is something to do with my stomach being inflated with gas, causing me acid reflux. But I’ve had it for so many years, I’ve stopped worrying. Sorry you have to wait so long for your X-ray. I guess if they thought it serious you would have been seen a lot earlier. Good luck with it all. I’m sure you are fine.

Hi, I have mid section side/back pain too and am hoping to rule out possible kidney stones next.

Thank you so much for your reply, it has put my mind at ease as I’m so worried it could be something worse like lung cancer. My X-ray is in 3 weeks not 33 (too many 3’s 😜). I am extremely bloated so thinking it is the gas causing the back pain. I do have arthritis in my neck so could be to do with that?

Back pain which is situated between the shoulder blades may be acid reflux. Acid reflux and IBS tend to go hand in hand.

Tend to agree although it doesn’t explain what is actually causing the uncomfortable gnawing.
