I just wondered. I had a small drink each night, but decided to do dry January, it's only been a week but I can already feel some improvement with my IBS C although still have problems, I've not had to take a stool softener since stopping

Try to drink a good bit of water x

I do drink plenty of fluids, but I have a slow transit and which causes more fluids to be reabsorbed than normal, causing constipation. Alcohol makes that worse as it is a diuretic x

Yes, but I often get severe diarrhoea.

Ah well there is a price to pay in all things we do

😜I drink alcohol to kill the boredom of living alone in virtual self isolation.

This covid thing is a lot worse than having a beer at night to look forward toduring the long days

👌🍺

I know what you mean but It depends on how much pain or discomfort you have. I'd try anything to help my symptoms x

I can drink alcohol. When my IBS started many years ago, I used to go down the pub after work, with the others who were going through divorces, and used to have a couple of scotch's and started to feel better, by the time I left the pub I felt great.

But I don't do that now, and if I do have a couple of scotch's it doesn't work anymore. Also I have a problem because if I get bitten by something, I have to take anti-histamine straight away and you shouldn't mix them with alcohol. Also on betablockers for high blood pressure and again, you are not supposed to drink too much with them, so the most I would drink now would probably be one or two drinks and most of the time I just don't bother. Also with COVID I don't want to get a reaction for a bite and have to get hold of antibiotics in a hurry!

Shame really.

One point, I would say though is last year, we were having the occasional bottle of wine with our evening meal spread over a couple of days and because of my problem with bites decided to try the alcolhol free stuff. It was really nice but didn't agree with the IBS. I really think I am wired the wrong way round!!

I used to have the occasional drink but only gin and tonic as wine is a no go for my IBS. But something changed and even gin brought on a bad attack so now haven’t drunk for a few years as just not worth the consequences. I don’t miss it only that I am always the designated driver. Nothing improves my IBS in fact having failed the bowel cancer test last week I am having another colonoscopy tomorrow morning my second my first was eight years ago. Anyone who has had one knows it’s the prepping that’s the worst. Constant diarrhoea on a daily basis then you have to self inflict a bout that will last hours. Wish me luck

Good luck! Had mine last week and yes the prep is shocking! Mine is diverticula disease which is quite advanced. Trying to find my way around things at the moment

I didn’t drink for 6 weeks and thought maybe my ibs would get better but it was awful for those 6 weeks so I started drinking again. I know it gives me diarrhoea the day after but other than that I feel ok with it. Weirdly when I’ve had a drink I think I relax and my bowel will stop cramping because I don’t feel stressed

Morning,

For me it depends on my stress levels at the time. If I’m not stressed and have symptoms anyway, I’m ok with a couple of drinks. I stick to clear spirits such as gin or vodka. If I’m stressed it’s a bad idea and my body lets me know before I’ve drank much at all - I just have to listen to my body. If I’m feeling ok, a couple of glasses of wine are ok.

Having a drink is now a rare occasion, I base it on how I’m feeling so can enjoy it without feeling ill afterwards.

I’m not a big drinker, when I was younger I didn’t listen to my body when it came to alcohol and my IBS, now I tend to become nauseated very quickly if my body can’t cope with alcohol at any given time. I’m sure friends and partners thought I was bulimic as most times out for meals and drinks I’d end up spending the evening vomiting after a couple of glasses of wine.

You are doing right listening to your body and it’s good advice. Good luck with it all. :-) x

For me rarely is the short answer. I've never been much of a drinker but I will on occasion and in moderation. I find I need to be very careful about what I have. Beer is not an option but I'm fine with spirits or wine if I stick to just a glass or two. More than that and I'll be in flare up the following day.

HiI gave up on alcohol many years ago - it played havoc with my IBS even a small sip of wine!!!! Shame really I loved the slightly waffy feeling after a couple of slurps but with age you get the slightly waffy feeling anyway.......................

Yes, a glass of rose wine with my evening meal, during the 1st lockdown I sometimes had 2 glasses. Don't touch anything else ie spirits. We are all different and its good that you have found it helpful for your IBS c not to drink alcohol. Believe it or not I find tea can cause me pain and diarrhoea so I am careful how many cups I have.
