Alcohol and IBS.

How many of you have stopped drinking alcohol because of your IBS and if so did you find it beneficial?

I’ve long suspected that it may be one of my triggers ( among many ) especially when it comes to flare ups so I’m thinking of eliminating it for a month or so to see if it helps.

I drink every so often but I don't think it makes a difference if I do or not, but maybe I don't drink often enouvh to be able to see if there is I difference. You have nothing to lose by trying it and seeing if it works for you.

Good luck with it, let us k ow how it goes please.

Hi there, I do ont drink much anymore. I'm a white wine drinker. I did stop completely for 6 months a few years back I find alcohol inflames my whole body, tummy included.

So it definitely makes my tum tum worse.

Do you notice any difference after you drink?

Maybe stop for a good month to see how you feel.. it certainly can't hurt

I stopped alcohol years ago and I've never missed it. Not only for IBS but it's beneficial for other reasons. I've been healthier in other ways besides, so it's never been an option for me to drink since I stopped. I'm sure if I did,. it would aggravate my IBS.

For me alcohol is a definite trigger - once I made the association it was yet another win against my IBS.

Alcohol will affect your digestion regardless, but as with most things, some will notice a difference, and others will not.

Depending on the severity of your situation and IBS symptoms- you would in my opinion be mad not to stop drinking alcohol and assess any potential changes.

Good luck :)

hi, I don’t drink now. If I do, the pain in my bowels lasts all day, instead of just the mornings. Sounds a good idea to do without and see how you go.

I’ve stopped drinking alcohol as I find it definitely makes my symptoms worse. I know this isn’t the same for everyone so maybe you could stop for a few weeks and then try 1 drink to see what happens. At least you’ll know then. Good luck

Certainly - as an alcoholic it was massive to detox and stay alcohol free - my gastric issues are greatly improved, more importantly I manage difficult days so much better, Pyscho logically and practically - for sure remove that from the equation you’ll see amazing results !!!

Too much seems to give me some diarrhea the next morning and of course can aggravate the stomach. However a moderate amount seems to create some relaxation which is good in the long run. Just tricky to find a balance.

White wine was my trigger for IBS in 1990. Now I can't drink red wine either. I can drink one G+T but no more at one time.

I have given up alcohol but my reason was because i was diagnosed with gallstones but since then i have found my IBS and tummy pains have improved. I have also cut out refined sugars and cut down on carbs too.

I very rarely drink sugary drinks, never appealed to me even as a kid. So much 💩 in them anyway. Problem is when you go out and want to avoid/cut down on alcohol the alternatives apart from water are poor.

Water is most definitely the best option for me though.

That is a problem for us suffers I tried soda and lime disgusting plus tried the alcohol free ones had the same affect as alcohol ones never sure it’s trial and error to what triggers our stomachs🤦🏻‍♀️

I believe carbonated drinks are a trigger for flare ups I’m certainly starting to think so anyway.

I know alcohol is not a great thing for IBS generally. But I find small amounts okay for me, and even helpful at times!

However, there are so many drinks I can no longer have...wine, for instance of any colour, or beers, cider etc. I can only drink vodka in small amounts, but it seems benign as far as I have discovered (for me anyway)

I am possibly going to be the odd one out but a small glass of rose wine does calm my tum.

Too much tea gives me indigestion, fizzy sodas give me gas. But I keep up my water intake

I've also noticed that one drink sipped slowly can have a calming influence on my tummy too. That has happened too many times to be just coincidence.
