Is this ibs?

for a few months now ive been having intense stomach pain after eating (usually in the evening) in the middle of my stomach, which spreads everywhere. i usually get sudden diarrhoea after eating which gives me very little time to make it to the toilet in time. i get nauseous a lot and always feel on the verge of fainting when this happens. at first i thought it couldve been a stomach bug but it's been on and off for a few months now, some days are better than others but i feel like it's getting worse and the pain is so bad.

Hi. You need to ask doctor for referral to gastro consultant as I think you may have what I have and that’s called bile acid/salt malabsorption. Look at website bad-uk.org for explanation. I was told for years I had IBS as I was suffering on and off like you describe. Over the years, yes years, it got worse and became daily. So I was trying to work fill time and spent most nights for an hour or 2 during the night on the toilet. And when I wasn’t being sick at the same time I was feeling sick. I also had a couple of accidents. Anyway kept a food diary as dr said it was what I was eating just to prove I was eating healthily (I have also put on weight over the years despite having diarrhoea every day). I was living on anti diarrhoea tablets. Anyway saw consultant, had tests, and was diagnosed with it and now have proper bile binder medication. What happens is when you you, your body produces bile to digest food. Any left over should be reabsorbed through the blood stream back to your liver. If it doesn’t get reabsorbed it sits in your colon. After a while the body realises this and flushes it out with water. That is why you get the urgent watery diarrhoea. The more fat in food the more bile is released so the dr was right in some respect so I low fat diet helps. There are also other triggers like caffeine, aspartame found in diet drinks/food, some fruit and veg. So low fodmap diet may help also. You may also be deficient in vitamins due to the malabsorption. I have to take D, B12, iron, folic, potassium and omega - all in high, prescribed doses. Sorry this is a long post but I suffered for so many years and didn’t do anything and the vitamin deficiency caused other issues so please speak to GP. Just a warning though a lot don’t know much about this so will say it’s IBS, please insist on a referral as you need a sehcat scan. I also had stool tests, bloods and a colonoscopy to rule out other things. If they won’t refer you ask if you can be prescribed sachets of colestyramine to trial which is a bile sequestrant. And get your vitamins tested. The website I mentioned has great info. Good luck.

Any symptoms that are not usual for you should be discussed with your GP. They are likely to run blood and stool sample tests.

If you are diagnosed with IBS and you are still suffering, you can check back in here since there is much that can be done to help your symptoms.
