Omeprazole

I have been taking omepraxole 20mg around 8am daily. I find that the acid suppression effects lasts only until 4-5pm after which I can feel the acid secretion again. Is it same for other once a day users of omeprazole?

I would check with your medics, you may need to, temporarily, increase to 2 per day (0800 and 2000 hours). I have been on them for about 20 years and occasionally have to add an extra pill. Good luck and stay safe

Did they diagonse the reason for overacid production?

I had an hiatus hernia, caused by NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs {Ibuprofen}).

I get tightness in the middle of the upper abdominal and feel full after eating a little which my doctor says is due over acid production but he can't say why this is happening ?

Daily 1 Omeprazole keeps it under control but I know as soon as I stop it will return

I don't have any acid reflux or heartburn or diarrhoea. Just the pressure and discomfort in the middle upper abdominal just below the ribs

As I understand it, Omeprazole increases as it is taken so it may need a temporary boost to get on top of the acid produced. An example would be if you atart taking it on Monday, then, by the following Monday, you will have built up a reservoir of the drug to fight the occasional over production. ( I believe it takes about a month to be fully effective, not a week). I would check with your medics, but, personally, would have no hesitation in taking an extra Omeprazole, for a few days.

Thanks. I actually took one daily for 3.5weeks and felt better so stopped it for a week and the symptoms returned so have started it again since 1 week. Dr has asked to continue for another month and then reassess.

Hi FRreedman. Does my symptoms feel like hiatus hernia to you compared to what you might have experienced?

It sounds as though it would be a good idea to get tested (tube up nose and down throat) at least to rule it out. I remember I used to say it was indigestion and not always heartburn.

I agree with FRreedman. I was told to start on one tablet and increase to 2 if needed. Check with your doctor first as everyone had different circumstances...

I’m on Cimetidine for acid suppression. I take one tablet, twice a day which works for me. Unfortunately, on omeprazole I felt sick. Hope you resolve your problem. Take care

Take 2 tablets a day 1 in the morning and 1 at night !,

Thanks All. Taking one a day causes constipation so reluctant to increase the dose. Also with a higher dose coming off this medication would be more difficult i think

Unfortunately their effect only lasts for a 12 hour period, hence some people being on 2 a day. I take mine in the evening.

I generally take one per day and have done for about 20 years now. However, I do have occasional need for 2, in which case I take one at night and one in the morning

Hi All

I have been taking omeprazole 20mg daily for just under 3 months now to control acidity. I think its making me constipated. I have no natural urge to go to the toilet. I have to apply some pressure to get a small bowel movement daily.

Has anyone had similar issue with omeprazole?

Can the side effect last so long . I would have thought that the body would have adjusted itself in 3 months
