Has anyone stopped omeprazole 20mg after taking it for 3.5 weeks,? Was there any acid rebound and if so how long did it take to resolve?
Is 3.5 weeks long enough period that would require reducing the does first.
After taking it for 3.5weeks I have stopped it completely 3 days ago since it was giving me constipation and I think my underlying symptoms may have improved. So far I have had slight increase in acidity level especially after meals. Not sure whether to restart it again and reduce gradually or just persevere and hope that any rebond symptoms will go away soon.
Any tips on managing the first week without PPI would be much appreciated

Looking at that - first time I was taking it for a lot longer than that. I just went cold turkey and cleaned up my diet, can’t remember any problems though.
I had similar problems with constipation and omeprazole so stopped after about a month and didn’t have any problems. If you have a strong coffee first thing, that might be your problem. I had something to eat before the coffee and so far so good.
Hi. What were your symptoms for which you took omeprazole?
My symptoms are tightness in the centre upper abdominal just below the ribcage and rumbling sounds. Omeprazole brought that under control but because of constipation I decided to stop. I am day 4 after stopping they symptoms have returned but so far are not a serve
Also having to eat much smaller options of bland meals
I had horrendous pains in the throat and chest extending down below the rib cage. It was really bad at one point and felt like I had pulled a muscle in my chest as well. Felt sick sometimes as well. For a few weeks it was miserable and omeprazole didnt seem to help very much so they moved me to esomeprazole. Wether it was a build up that eventually worked that just coincided with the switch over I dont know but my GP said in future they would give me eso when I got a flare up. I was told to "blandify" my diet which I did for a while and it seems to have sorted itself out with the odd week on eso when I feel tinges. Had blood/stool tests and nothing showed up apart from one of them that showed very slight inflammation but it was so low they didnt have any concerns. I also use bimuno which helps my other symptoms. That may help with acid as well? Gut/bowel problems seem very hard to narrow down and treatments seem very hit or miss
I was and still have omeprozele on my prescription list, although I have IBS and a hiatus hernia, I found out a long time ago that PPI inhibitors are not good for you, despite the hype of this so called miracle gastric drug. It been linked to mask a certain bacteria, it also can lead to poor distribution of essential vitamins and other compounds. However I am retired with lower stress or fuss levels and keep rigidly to time table meal times. The only time I take one ,is before I have Chinese takeaway that could give me acid before bed. I have always gone by many doctors advice and not eaten after 6.30pm in evening. I'm supposed to take them twice a day, but no way given new evidence. One a week maybe if a certain meal may be spicy?
Hi. Do you feel taking omeprazole occasionally has the desired effect? I was told that you need to take it for at least 4 days continuously to see the effect
Hi not for me. I have one about 45 minutes before eating a takeaway. By the the time I go to bed, I have no indigestion or reflux. But one item that I had a lot of problems with was eating citrus fruits. Anything like oranges or orange juice are bad news for me. Of course everyone is different. My main advice is to cut out as much dairy that you can, ear regular, eating in really empty stomach can kick of IBS. IF you get reflux at night ,it may take a while to calm down if weaning of ppi. Excess acid of course is not good. And was the cause of many ulcers long ago, which my mother had, and led to an operation to heal it. If your not sure, always get advice from doctor before changing your regime.🤗
