A very common cause of IBS is excessive colonic fermentation. This is normally caused by a reflex issue between the small intestine and the colon causing fermentation to happen further down in the colon. This then causes all kinds on IBS type symptoms. This is often accompanied with some pain in the lower right abdomen due to ileocecal valve irritation. Does anyone else have this lower right pain?

Pain in the lower right side? A common cause for IBS
Hi Philbs1980
When I used to get pain with IBS C I used to get it in many places and that tended to be my lower abdomen, back and in between my shoulder blades (my IBS changed from IBS C to mainly IBS D after a very bad bout of food poisoning). I wouldn't, however, say that I ever really got pain in the lower right abdomen.
I hope that it eases soon.
Yes that's where my pain is and the ascending colon and yes I have read about the connection with ileocecal valve there was a big study on it, what I remember also is that the valve maybe faulty and does not open/close properly🤔
I have recently been diagnosed and my main problem is pain on my right side.It starts at my abdomen and travels right up to my ribs , causing alot of discomfort and nausea. I'm having my second flare up at the moment, which I'm feeling really tired with. I work seven days a week as a carer which means meal times are unpredictable. The doctor has prescribed medication but I'm not a fan on taking medication so I've started drinking peppermint tea?. I didn't realise IBS could have such an impact on life.
I get the pain here too and mucus in stools, have you had that?
Yes lots of mucus, sometimes a spot of blood too. But doctor doesn't seem concerned.
My problem seems to be in the lower left side, but i have often felt fermentation is a problem.
Mostly mine is central near belly button to lower right. When I had gallstones the pain was central kind of near breast bone which went into my back. Since having gall bladder removed I sometimes still get this kind of pain but rarely now.
I'm currently in a flare and it's not nice
Hi Philbs,
I have this pain. I was diagnosed over 15 years ago but this is a new symptom for me.
I had a flare up about 2 months ago that gave this very sudden & severe pain in the lower right abdomen - I though it was appendicitis.
For the following few weeks, I had that pain, an ache around the right hip, lower back ache, sharp pain in the right shoulder/neck, headaches & fatigue. My muscles were also very tight and sore.
I've now been on the FODMAP diet (elimination phase) for almost 5 weeks. My symptoms have greatly improved although not entirely gone. As the aim of FODMAP is to restrict the fermentable foods, that would make sense with your description of ileocecal valve irritation.
I get a lower right discomfort : dull ache and white mucus in stools most days
Glad to read your post. Was diagnosed with IBS years ago but has been relatively mild in past few years. Tendency to have lower right side pain which came back in Feb of this year. In past got ultrasound but nothing showed up. In past visited kinesiologist who confirmed my ICV closed so interested to hear you mention the connection. My pain at the minute comes and goes but is generally like a cramp or stitch in area to right of belly button, often like dull ache. Just wondering if anyone has tips for managing pain?
My ibs pain is lower right but I would say rather than this pain causing ibs, I would say that ibs causes this pain xxx
Hi Viklou, I have just come across this post whilst searching for ileocecal valve on the site. I started getting right side pain about 20 years ago but it is becoming more dominant now than the left side pain I used to have when I was more IBS(D). I didn't realise you had right side pain. Is your pain always right side (if you don't mind me asking) or does it alternate from left and right.
My pain has always been towards lower right quadrant. Apart from the Gallstone pain prior to having gallbladder surgery which was kind of upper right central
Okay thank you and do you tend to be more constipated would you say rather than the other? Also do you mind me asking what gallbladder surgery you had!
I'm more IBSd usually. My movements are never really formed, even when I can't go for what reason I don't know.
I had gall bladder removed 2015
You do realize that having your gallbladder out can give you Bile Acid Malabsorption (BAM)?!
Yes I do. I've had a seHcat scan and although low it's not considered low enough to be BAM. It needs to be below 15% absorption. Mines 26%
Yes, I had the SeHCAT test too but like you didn't reach the criteria. They never told me there was a particular measurement to meet, although with hindsight I guess there must be, in order to make a decision. I wish I had asked now, not that it would have made any difference. But I would have liked to have given it a try!
Yes Philbs1980 ileocecal valve pain for months, the osteopath solved it for me.
It was bad enough having an ultrasound when in a lot of pain. Not sure I could cope with an osteopath massage in that area during a bad flare
I have to say it wasn't very pleasant, to say the least, in fact it was pretty painful, but very very effective. The day after the pain that I had had for months had gone. This was almost a year and a half ago and the pain hasn't come back. I have other bowel issues but no pain
Do all osteopaths do this?
Hi Maureen1958 I don't know if all osteopaths do it, but I work at a Physiotherapy and Osteopathy Centre and both the ones who work there do it.
You could always ask before going and you can also look on YouTube for videos that say Ileocecal Valve massage, it obviously won't be as effective as an Osteopath doing it but it might help x
Yes, I have looked at the videos but would be worried I might do more damage than good and also I don't actually know if that is my problem or not. For example this morning I had awful right side pain and then this afternoon had left side feeling of diarrhoea although I resisted going to the toilet and tonight I feel great at the moment but it won't last! But thanks for that though I will bear it in mind.
I suppose this may help the pain not sure about the other stuff though
Hi there just found this post I have pain there also get a tugging pulling feeling do you think it could be ikeocecal valve problem ?
Well you just described exactly what I have been feeling for years! Thank you for your post, it helped me understand it more.
Now what do we do to remedy this rumble in the gut jungle?
