Gluten Free foods

Hi all, just an observation. Feel free to comment if you wish. I don't follow any particular diet, I just avoid things when they seem to disagree with me. These things may change. But I have noticed that gluten free stuff always seems to make me feel worse. I try them from time to time as an experiment but haven't found any of them make me feel better. They all seems to make me feel worse. I have tried gluten free pizza and pasta. The pizza seems to make me more constipated. With the pasta I found some made with vegetables which gave me a runny tummy and I had some from Marks and Spencer recently made with rice flour and corn flour and that made me more bunged up again. I think I might give up with the gluten free stuff now, although I seem to be okay with gluten free cakes and biscuits. Not so good with bread though.

Hi Maureen

I'm about to embark on the Low Fodmap diet under a Dietician, my appointment is on 7 January where I'm going to have to take a food diary along with me to my appointment which they'll then scrutinise.

I've had many problems since suffering with food poisoning in November 2018, I would have thought I would have been better by now but no such luck. I have tried many things and gluten free is one of them as I visited a Nutritionist in July this year and she said I had a high sensitivity to Gluten, Rye, Barley, Wheat (obvious I know), Foramlin (this is some kind of preservative) and Milk (I'm Vegan so don't have any dairy) and a medium sensitivity to peas.

After trying gluten free products which I didn't enjoy at all I read on the IBS Network that it can be the Fructans in Gluten that you can have problems with and recommended making Spelt Sourdough Bread as Spelt is an ancient grain and is a lot lower in Fructans. I have tried the recipe on their website but unfortunately it didn't work for me but I've no doubt it works for others. Fortunately I have found a Spelt Sourdough recipe that works for me and it's:

dovesfarm.co.uk/recipes/who...

I have a dough rising at the moment and will be baking the bread tomorrow. I have found that I'm okay with sourdough bread and can also tolerate what you buy in the supermarket although there are quite a few supermarket versions that aren't authentic but I've read that the Sainsbury's multi grain sourdough is.

I've got lentil pasta and chickpea pasta in my cupboard which I've yet to try as I know for a fact that I react to normal pasta.

I hope this helps.

Hi crazyfitness, I'll be interested in hearing how you get on with the Low Fodmap Diet and Dietician. I have not gone down that route as I find I'm okay with most high fodmaps and often not with the low fodmaps. Although, having said that I am better with no food at all.

I have tried the Waitrose No 1 Spelt Sourdough bread, I quite like it but have to be a bit careful with it, I can only eat one slice or two small ones. I'm sure if I eat too much it would bung me up. I also put lots of buttery spread on it. I usually just have a small amount of bread, ie two smallish slices of a soft white bread or two very small rolls. I'm afraid I'm no cook so I don't make stuff apart from rock cakes!

I think the vegetable pasta I had was lentil. I had it at a Pizza Express, if I remember correctly.

The M&S pasta was actually very nice to eat, my husband enjoyed it too. We have another one in the fridge to eat by Tuesday. But funnily enough I feel quite good tonight, so don't know whether to try it again or not!

I will be reporting back on how I get on, I know I do struggle with some high Fodmap foods. I had onion chutney over a period of a few days and am now suffering unfortunately. Agree, much better when you don't eat but that's definitely not the best thing to do🤣

Waitrose sourdough is supposed to be one of the authentic breads.

Watch this space re feedback from low FODMAP diet.

You’ve just dredged up a memory, I made rock cakes at school in cookery. They were so hard no one could eat them. 🥴

Ha ha, I love rock cakes but you can't seem to get them many places. Sometimes tea shops have them but they are always the traditional ones with fruit and often have mixed spice and cinnamon in them which my tummy does not like very much. I make my own concoction of what ever takes my fancy, cherries are my favourite, but I do ginger sometimes, choc chips, coffee, lemon, anything I can think of at the time. I made some with Limoncello once as well.

Have never liked rice cakes. Here in U.S. they are So bland and taste like plastic. They are too hard and too difficult to digest as is bread or pizza for me.

No Eliana, not rice cakes, rock cakes. They are a British thing, bit like scones. When we were kids, it was the sort of thing we would make with our mums because they are so quick and easy to make. See link below:

bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/rock...

They are called rock cakes because they are suppose to look like rocks not because they are hard. They should not be hard. They are yummy.

I have not had rice cakes but I would guess they are pretty dry to eat!

Napolina make pea pasta and red lentil pasta, I buy it in Sainsbury's. I find I can also tolerate Sainsbury's own label wholemeal spelt pasta.

The spelt pasta from Sainsbury's sounds good. I might give that a try.

Hi. I started a gluten free diet back in August and I feel much, much better. On occasion, when out eating, I unfortunately consumed gluten and it does cause a knock on effect with me so I try to stay away from gluten. But everyone is different.
