GLUTEN FREE

I have IBSC and tried gluten free bread to see if this helps. It did make my stools softer and I passed a lot more stool. But it made me feel so unwell with pain. Does anyone find gluten free products do not agree with them.

yes, I have celiac disease and even with gluten free products, I still get horrible foul smelling gas and tummy ache. I recently read that it may be an intolerance to xanthum gum (which Is in most gluten-free items), the other one that could be used is guar gum. I have not had a chance to try that yet because I do not make my own flour blends yet, I usually buy the premade blends which by the way are horrible. I suppose you have to have a lot of knowledge about what different flours can do and how they act in baking and cooking and I just don’t have that knowledge yet.

your welcome! It may also be the kind of flours used. Here they are usually a mixture of different kinds of rice flours, along with the xanthum gum and tapioca starches. Good luck finding the problem my friend.

also I should’ve said the best way to go gluten-free is to just not have any gluten containing item items. If you stick with fresh food items you don’t have to worry about gluten-free. Gluten is found mostly in processed items like breads, cookies, cake and mixes, wheat, rye, barley and cross contaminated into oatmeal, (specifically get gf oats if going gf!) But it is hard on the low FODMAP diet I am not going to lie! lol

Those are great resources! To save on money I would just eat fresh! If I were able to have a farm I sure would 😀😀😀!

It might be the ingredients the gluten free products are made with that upset you? Chickpea flour...potato flour.....maize flour and many other things. Plus there might be other ingredients, so check. Sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol might be added and I know for a fact I personally can't tolerate artificial sweeteners. They do seem pretty common in lots of processed foods, even what ought to be savoury foods like pastry or bread.

my daughter has ibs d. I have tried lepicol from health shop , it’s a fibre powder taken in water and it’s helping. It’s for constipation as well and she has had no side effects other than going to toilet 2/3 times instead of morning rush

I tried Schar gluten-free bread when I was doing the Fodmap elimination for 8 weeks. I had the Schar ciabatta. Now ciabatta is my favourite bread, and the gluten free one was a horrible disappointment compared to my regular one. I forced it down toasted every morning but hated the taste even though it was okay for my gut. I didn't try the brown one.

The one that tasted better was "Genius" sliced. I wasn't used to what I call "plastic bread" (plastic bagged) I always ate artisan bread. Genius tasted a lot better than Schar, and was more pleasant for breakfast, but it had seeds. Some people's tummies might be upset by those seeds.

To be honest I didn't notice any real benefit from gluten free bread so when the elimination was over I re-introduced ordinary bread again. My toast in the morning was the only gluten I ate at that point. Now I have cake too.

Maybe there's an ingredient in the bread that isn't in the biscuits that upsets you? Maybe if you could bake your own from gluten free flour it might work out better? I never got that far...

Yes I have a lot of issues with gluten free products. Over the years it has got worse and I find that a lot of gluten free products now trigger IBS. Unfortunately this means a more restrictive diet but i try to keep positive and keep trying to find foods I can tolerate. Hope you are able to find the right gluten free products for you.
