I’m new here. Having bad IBS flare up today with diarrhoea . No appetite whatsoever - will keep fluids up. Stress plays a part but not sure what foods yet are a cause. Any advice on what to eat welcome. Thank you.

If you are in a flare with diarrhoea, then you want low fibre foods, but my starting point for anyone with IBS/IBD is - Reduce alcohol, no fizzy drinks, don't eat peanuts or sweetcorn (they are indigestible) avoid Brussel sprouts and baked beans for obvious reasons. The biggest problem with IBS d is when your body needs to remove poisonous or un wanted products from your intestines, it will force it out (d), and you will have to decide when the unwanted stuff has gone and you can then use Imodium or some similar drug

Thank you for your reply . The only fizzy drink I have is carbonated water - is still water better for IBS?

Yes, I think still water is easier on the gut. My drink of preference during the day used to be fizzy water until I realised it was contributing to bloating and discomfort. I have switched to still water and seen an improvement. I avoid anything fizzy.

Hi, In case you thought I was ignoring your question regarding the fizzy water, as you didn't hit the reply button, when you replied to my comment, I wasn't notified of any comments you, or any one else had made. Well, I've found out now (by chance), and would say avoid all fizzy drinks, especially when in a flare.

If you need some energy just freshly cooked plain white rice. Still water to drink. This gets digested in the small intestine and will give your colon a rest. If you need to go out you can take immodium. Have you been referred to a dietician to take you through the fodmap diet to find out what your triggers are? I managed to stop my IBS-D with the fodmap diet (even when I was under stress).

I agree! Stopped my D after finding fructans and lactose in the low fodmap diet set me off :)

Toast with jam, plain biscuits, plain crisps, try and keep off dairy products and maybe wheat no coffee. Mashed plain potatoes, fish, rice at the moment I'm having a flare up too wonderful isn't it ,not!!! Still drinking tea and green tea or just diluted juice or water. Like you I have no appetite but I also feel sick. Hope that helps.

Dear xjrs, asbayford and Hollings

Thank you all very much for your advice and suggestions which I have taken note of. I will try my doctor to see if he will refer me to a dietician re Fodmap diet. Still water and lactose free milk purchased today. Also bought linseed - anyone found these useful? Dear Hollings empathise with feeling sick - this seems to come instead of feeling hungry - keep up your fluids and tiny bites of food - thinking of you.

I highly recommend aloe vera juice and peppermint oil capsules. I swear by them!

Hi,

Sorry to hear you're struggling. IBS is different for everyone.

We recommend keeping a 12-week wellness diary recording what you are eating and how you are feeling.

Drink water. Try eating a few crackers, but your body can go on only water. Are you allowed Immodium or Gravol? Ask your Pharmacist. If you want to eat, have some white toast, banana or white rice. Not much and sleep.

Not what you're looking for?
