Omaprazole side effects

I have taken omaprazole for several years as I have a hiatus hernia and esophagitis. I have now realised this is when my IBS symptoms started. I think it is the omaprazole causing all my stomach problems. Is there anything that can be done as I cannot come off them as it causes me unbareable acid. Thank you for reading.

I would be surprised to find Omeprazole caused your IBS/IBD, because I have been taking it for 20 plus years, and, during that time, I have had flares, resection and remission. Surely, if Omeprazole caused the problems, I wouldn't have had long periods of remission while taking it.

That is interesting. Maybe it effects people in different ways. Thank you for sharing your experience with me.

I had been on lanzaprozal for years taken off it this year because it can cause brittle bones. Not looked back since. My Ibs problems have disappeared. I am a new person. Try and find a natural remedy for acid control feel sure you will find the answer somewhere. I took lanzaprozal for gastritis not had anything since coming off it. A 2 way win. Good luck

That is very encouraging. Thank you.

I had surgery for this called a Fundoplication. No more Omeprazole :-)

I would work with your Dr to test the theory. I have always believed in taking breaks from long term meds to see where I stand with issues. But those breaks should be done with the guidence of a Dr.

Thank you. I have an appointment tomorrow so I will discuss it with her.

I am sorry you too suffer. I heard a radio 4 programme about the effects. I could be totally wrong, of course. Maybe you would like to listen to the programme? Its a health one. I googled it.

I started lanzoprazole and had stomach pains. GP doubled the dose thinking it was acid, and they got worse. I eventually made the connection, stopped lanzoprazole and the pains improved. I have since had to go back on it for the acid, but reduce the dose when I can to minimise the IBS problems,

Thank you for sharing that with me. I spoke to my dr today and she was shocked I am on 60mg and suggested tapering off. I am sorry you still have IBS symptoms.

Was given omaprazole some time back for hiatus hernia & gastric irritation. Had awful side effects. I discovered by chance Zantac ( Ranitidine) was very effective. I only take 150 mgm each night which is 99% effective. Occasionally if I am woken with acid reflux I take another.

Always try to minimize my medication to the minimum amount giving the most effective effect

It is interesting the Omeprazole effected you too. I am glad you found something that helps.

Hello

I’ve been on Omeprazole for about 5 years and developed problems with my back. Had MRI and Xrays and it showed that my bones were thinning. I was put on Calcichew and the consultant said it was the most important supplement to take. Still suffer from IBS symptoms although IBS hasn’t been officially diagnosed.

in reply toSanditon

Oh how awful you have experienced such a side effect. I am sorry to hear that.

We suggest speaking to your GP or pharmacist.

in reply toIBSNetwork

I have discussed it with my GP. She suggested I taper off over three weeks and use gaviscon.
