Colestipol for IBS-D
Hiya! It can take about 10-14 days before you notice results keep at it! X
I have been on it for about a year. I.noticed it within days. I also take Bentyl as needed. I have a friend who takes 9 a day plus an imodium at lunch. I only need one in the morning, anymore than that has the opposite effect on me. Everyone is different. See if your doctor will prescribe a low dose Xanac to help with the anxiety. Might help to avoid triggering the diarrhea. I have lived with IBS-d for so long that mentally I still have mild anxiety now. I haven’t had any diarrhea for a year now and seemed to have control but can’t bring myself to trust my body. I have low dose Xanax .25 that I cut in half and then cut the half in half. It’s just enough to calm my gut down. I also take a probiotic. The one thing my Gastro told me is that there is no cure for IBS. He is a firm believer of its existence and says all we can do is treat the symptoms with diet and medication. Good luck and hang in there.
Hi, Flik22 - Yes...I take Colestipol for chronic diarrhea. You might not be taking enough of it. I take 6 tablets a day (3 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon). I started with 4 each day and that didn't quite do it, so my doctor allowed me to up it to 6 tablets a day. This works wonderfully, and I have not had any diarrhea since upping the dose. How much are you taking? Tell your doctor that it's not working for you and he'll up the dose most likely. It did not take long for the Colestipol to start working...perhaps a day or 2 is all. I've been on it for over a year now, and yes, I believe it is a miracle drug! Two other drugs work very well: Welchol and Questran.
I have been given Colestipol sachets as a substitution for my regular Questran which has a supply problem currently. I am not finding that it suits me. As others have said you may need to play around with the dose of tablets or powders. When I took Questran for the first time it probably took about 2 weeks before I noticed that the diarrhoea had settled. I only take one sachet at 6pm every day. On the Colestipol I am finding that I have diarrhoea in the mornings. I shall be going back to Questran as soon as possible when the new manufacturer is up and running.
