My doc thinks I have ibs and I wanted to ask if anyone out there has the same symptoms. For the last few years I have real issues with persistent regular flatulence ( very smelly) and intermittent constipation. Anyone any ideas for self care? Thank you

Try taking mint tea in the mornings to help with your windy problem, as for the other, eat a diet high in fibre, or take fibogel drinks. They will help with the constipation problem too. Keep a diary of your bowel movements, so you can check it yourself and show it to the doctor so he can see how often you have the problem. I hope this will be helpful, but I know the mint tea will definitely help. xx
Hi jemima I have this problem but it is leaky gas type I have no awareness of it coming. Just the smell.
I have found cutting out milk helps. Lots of fruit and veg that I can tolerate - apples are safe for me. Yakult good for constipation too / once a day is good that is a probiotic drink.
If you have the leaky gas type of flatulence let me know and I can send you more ideas.
Aldo shreddies inderwear are good if you are sitting - they have a flatulence carbon filter in them.
I wear two. If you google shreddies underwear it will come up.
I have had the same since August last year, I’ve tried cutting every food/drink out of my diet for 2 weeks at a time and cannot find any culprit!! It’s THE most frustrating thing, embarrassing and uncomfortable. I have tried every I can think of. The doctor has referred me to a dietician, so I am waiting for that. If you come up with a cure in the meantime please share xx
2 weeks is probably not long enough to be honest. Most professionals recommend cutting foods for at least a month, preferably three. Ask the dietician about trying the Fodmap diet - a good dietician will work with you to get to the root of the problem.
I've tried Fodmap but it didn't do anything for me, sadly. Everyone is different. Have you thought about intolerance testing? That can take out the hard work of figuring out triggers but it's expensive. York Labs is the best.
Yeah I looked into that but I was worried I’d spend a load of money on a company that may not be 100% accurate etc, I will look into York. Thank you for the advice, very much appreciated.
I was convinced it was eggs at one point, causing constipation on and off and the wind, when I cut those out I was fine for 4 days, but then it came back. Eggs are in a lot of things; give that a try xx
I'd definitely recommend cutting things out for a considerable amount of time if you think they could be triggering your symptoms. Much longer than 4 days - York Labs told me 3 months, though they do say you should see an improvement after a few weeks. My test results came back with a red flag for dairy and an amber one for coconut, and cutting out dairy products did help a little.
If it's an NHS dietician they won't offer those sort of tests (too expensive), but a decent dietician will at least cover all options with you, including going private for additional tests etc. A comprehensive stool analysis is another one to consider (this includes all sorts of things like candida and bacteria inbalance). Good luck!
Yes, the flatulance is a real problem for me. Doc told me to take phazyme (simethicone) as part of daily meds. It really has helped... not 100%..but a lot kot better.
I had very similar symtoms and after going through a food intolerance test, elimination diet, ultrasound and colonoscopy I was diagnosed with SIBO. I have been taking medication for 3 months now (2 weeks on and 2 weeks off) and feel 90% better. I still have other IBS problems but the embarrassing wind has mostly gone!
I have IBS d but suffer badly with flatulence and it’s so embarrassing. Most of the time it’s not smelly but noisy. I think it’s food insensitivity plus anxiety that causes it. Every so often I will cut different foods out like sugars, onions, mushrooms, milk and chocolate. I try not to eat too much wheat. I buy different medications and am now on Silicogel so will see how I get on with that. All advice is appreciated.
