Big set back

I'm feeling very deflated today, just yesterday I had another worst experience of my life, luckily it was not in public and luckily only I and now all of you know about it. I was on my way way home, only 10 mins from home and I just couldn't make it, and the nightmare happened, the embarrassment the frustration the most degrading thing that could happen, happened. I was just in a good run of things after not going out for years, I had been managing to get out a bit and socialise. Now I feel like I'm back to square one and as low as I was 25 years ago or so when this nightmare with ibs started, really dont know what to do next, I really do feel like this will never go away and my life is totally ruled by it. I don't feel like I can have a relationship, I can't have a job far away or travelling. I can't go on holidays. It's just so limiting. I have tried fodmap, diets, pshyclogists, doctors, had all tests, tried all medication, it's end of the road ! Sorry for the rant, feelingas low as ever

Chin up!!! You’ve been there before & got through it, you can do it again. Something must’ve been a trigger if you’ve been ok for some time. You just need to figure it out what it was, food or stress? I know it can be unpredictable but don’t let it get you down. If you start worrying about it again it will make you worse & you’re in that vicious circle again. X

I know just how you feel it has happened to me and it makes you feel like you have no control over your body but you should just put it down to an accident I always wear Tena pants now when I go out and it helps me feel less anxious and nobody needs to know. I hope you feel better soon.

Xx

Thanks for your reply x

As Squirrels 777 says, there must have been a trigger. If it is not stress and anxiety, it is something you have eaten. I have had IBS for 40 years, and I have had your experience too. Think carefully about that day, what did you eat, had you had a drink? Certain foods are notorious, cabbage, kale, broccoli, sprouts, cauliflower, even a tiny amount. Don’t drink a large amount with your meal, too much beer or wine can trigger it for me.

Think back carefully.

Thanks for the reply, I'll think hard about the possible causes

Hi. I would not say I have IBS per se but I do have very, very sensitive intestines - which seemed to happen after, in 2017, I was hit by FOUR intestinal overgrowths - three of them Candida which, inexplicably ran riot in my intestines and wrecked my microflora - I'm still suffering the effects (no one knows why it even happened, though stress is a possible factor and the fact that I'd been drinking gallons of milk for years until I also, around the same time, became SEVERELY intolerant of whey - I mean it's near true allergy status!). I suddenly can't tolerate certain things - I had beetroot, for example, on Friday and felt dreadful but I put it all down to a tetanus booster I'd had on Thursday. But then on Sunday, at the gym, I had to go to the toilet urgently every 20 mins! Not realising beetroot was an issue (never eaten it before really), I had more on Sunday and it's STILL going through my system, still causing bad gastrointestinal issues and I'm feeling ropey, sore back etc etc I find it also terribly limiting to fear if new foods will make me feel awful BUT what I'm TRYING to focus on is, for foods like beetroot, well, it's not especially delicious and I'm going to miss it. Of course, maybe I'm wrong BUT the fact that the beetroot is still VERY OBVIOUSLY going through my system suggests that I'm struggling to process it at any great speed and each wave of distress seems to follows an urgent toilet visit. What I'm saying is the same as others I guess - try to figure out what causes this bout and stick to safe foods - which you like - for a few days to try to lift you a bit. Good luck - it's tough having sensitive intestines, I know & I sometimes moan to my doctor that I get annoyed about people with supermarket baskets full of unhealthy food who seem happy & healthy and he reminds me that such people do often develop other health issues due to a poor diet. Meanwhile, we're doing regular tests to keep an eye on the state of my micro flora and I'm still desperately hoping that, one day....

Just to add to my previous comments, watch out for food in restaurants that may be a bit sloppy and full of fat like lasagne. Eat stuff that you are sure will be OK, don’t take a risk.

I find out that even an argument with a receptionist or with the doctor him self can set off my IBS symptoms because i feel frustrated !! try to review your day ..did you have a talk with someone that "Subconsciously " irritated you without really feeling it in your " conscious state ?? yess this is how complex and tricky IBS can be !! and remember the reaction to the trigger can either be immediate or "delayed" until after hours or even the next day .

So sorry for you, I had a similar experience last week! It does make you feel very low, but I pop my imodiums again and keep smiling, even though things are so hard. I don't seem to be able to eat fruit and vegetables, which is really annoying as I would love to be a healthy person. But if I eat them the next next I am terrible, you are not alone....I have a gastro appointment in 1.5 weeks, I have waited 5 months for it (well 30 years to eventually be referred) and I am pinning hopes on this, but something inside me knows that it probably won't help, as no one has helped so far.

Yes I'm very similar, I can't eat much fruit or veg. And like you I don't hold out for a solution. It's draining. And immodium for me works short term then few days after gives me major problems, in fact they could have been a factor this time. Thanks for the reply and good luck

do you think imodium cause more problems than they solve?

Terriblytired profile image
Terriblytired in reply tohuggit

For me they seem to. I can't say everyone will have the same experience with them as me. I can't seem to find anything that works consistently, I'm really struggling at the moment

you are not alone they don't always work for me, and also I find I have problems more or less every 2-3 days I think this may be the amount of imodium I take though.

I'm currently trying silicolgel again, I had brief success before with it. Yeah I seem to go through spells of bad weeks or days or months where whatever I do its bad. Exhausting!

Yes absolutely, me too, silicolgel made me worse. I just wish there was a normal button I could press.
