Constant Acid Reflux

For the last year I have been having really bad acid reflux, was put on Lansoprazole last November and currently still taking them, but I think they have stopped working as for the last few weeks I have constant stomach ache/cramps just below my ribs, my intestines just feel like they are constantly moving and spasms. Burning in chest, acid coming up when I lay down on my side when I go to bed. I am struggling to sleep as my stomach gargling and twitching is making it difficult. Going back to the doctors next Wednesday as things are improving and I don’t know what to do and also having anxiety makes me worry I have bowel cancer. Struggling to eat much and lost weight as anything I eat sets it off.

Hey there. I know you must be very worried and frightened, but I hope I can reassure you a bit. Lansoprazole can cause all your symptoms. My mother-in-Law was on it and she had terrible pain around her side and her ribs. The doctor took her off it and tried her with Nexium and she’s a lot better. I also have acid reflux and Lansoprazole did absolutely nothing for me. So I take Nexium (esomeprazole) and it works well for me.

Interestingly, I had been in 20mg morning and 20mg at night for some years and over the summer, I started to have the most terrible reflux, pain, regurgitation. I felt so unwell and panicked that I had something very serious wrong. I found out that long term use of these meds can actually cause the body to produce way more acid, because we do need some acid in our stomachs to digest our food. I cut my dosage down to one in the morning and the symptoms went away within a couple of days.

Ask your doctor if you can try Nexium (or esomeprazole) and see how you get on with that. Do tell them about your symptoms too - I’m pretty sure you just need a better med. xxx

I've had fantastic results by using bicarbonate of soda its cheap and works well or if I'm out somewhere away from home I buy sterilised milk both work well I hardly ever get it now. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply, think I’m going to stop taking them as every time I take them I get kidney pains in my back and all these symptoms and see if the doctor can put me on an alternative.
