Nausea help!

Hi all. Just found this forum and wondered if anyone could help my son. He is 14 and has been suffering since the age of 8 with nausea. Had tests done at GOSH but to no avail. Found some amazing chewable digestive enzymes by Houstons which he has been taking for 3 years and had 3 years of almost symptom free. All of a sudden it appears to be starting up again with extreme nausea. Wondering if it could be the Fructose in the enzymes which would be a shame because they have enabled him to live a fairly normal life. Does anyone have any advise such as probiotics etc. It's all making him feel very depressed. Wondering if it's IBS.

Thank you for that. I'm willing to try anything which may help.

Is he seeing a pediatric gastroenterologist? That would be the best help.

Yes he is being referred back to the paediatric team at my local hospital but been down this road before and they were useless. Feels like I'm going round in circles.

Sometimes it is very difficult for doctors to get to a diagnosis. I would just keep pushing for answers. It may help if you can take another adult such as a friend with you to the appointments. Sometimes another person who is not directly involved can be more active in asking questions and insisting on answers.

Could the sudden change be related in part with going back to school stress? This could be aggravating his symptoms (and when school starts and he feels reassured, you may find that the enzymes are effective again). Both my children are nervous about going back to school - although there is no real reason why. It is just the change after several weeks off school and the thought of a new class.

If your son constantly feels nervous, an NLP specialist could help you both with that, as could meditating, learning to do tai chi, listening to music etc.

Hello,

I'm sorry your son is suffering. I know you mentioned previous tests, what did these include? I was diagnosed as wheat and fructose intolerant at 16 and since my similar symptoms have subsided. I'll explain my story..

I'd already been diagnosed with IBS but I had started to get really tired all the time (I would sleep well and then fall asleep at school) and was feeling bloated and nauseous, I had on occasion vomited my breakfast. I had a blood test for coeliac disease which was negative but was then told by another doctor that these weren't always reliable and that you can be wheat intolerant not gluten. I hence went wheat free for 2 weeks, had one biscuit and was violently ill. I then started a wheat free diet which improved my symptoms but did not resolve them all. I still felt very nauseous in the mornings and was bloated. I was sent for a fructose test at the hospital which came back extremely positive and I subsequently went fructose free. Since then I have felt so much better. I am now 24 and occasionally have IBS flare ups due to stress but the everyday bloating and gut upsets are resolved, I didn't actually realise how ill I felt all the time until I rectified my diet as I just thought it was normal!

I have also tried probiotics and enteric coated peppermint pills, I found these helped with IBS symptoms when stressed or I knew I was eating a high dairy food when eating out etc.

I hope you find some answers soon.

Hi there. Thank you for your reply. My son is due to be the gastric team in 4 weeks and I will certainly mention some of the things you have said here. It just feels like it has been a long road and so unfair to be having these problems at such a young age. It's good to hear you found the answer to your problems. I hope one day that more money is invested in finding a real cure for these problems for so many who suffer on a daily basis.
