I have severe IBS D which is greatly affected by stress. Today I helped my dad move house but there were many issues with the move (which still aren't sorted). On top of that both of my parents have health problems so need my help a lot. I'm usually good at dealing with a lot but today I started to feel very panicky and my someache feels upset and I cant seem to calm it down. It feel like I could end up with a bad case of D anytime. I really need to get some sleep so that I am able to help my dad over the weekend. Has anyone got any ideas that I can use to settle my stomach especially things that work quickly? just to mention I have had some Imodium already. Thanks for reading, any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

A mild tranquilizer would help you to calm down.

Hi, I have similar symptoms and I've found doing mindfulness meditation (I use the headspace app) and taking Ashwagandha helps with stress and anxiety.

Have you tried Heathers Tummy Tamer peppermint oil? Also Ginger tea is also very good at relaxing spasms. If the spasms are often, accompanied by loose stools, you may want to look into a prescription medication such as Bentyl or Levsin..both can be taken on an empty stomach up to four times a day.

Hi, I only know how to settle a (suddenly) nauseous stomach: cola or ginger or an HCL tablet or diluted lemonjuice or diluted vinegar.

But this still might work for you because they have the same cause: anxiety.

You see, the acidity of your stomach acid is determined by cortisol, the anti chronic stress hormone. People under stress use their cortisol for stress and then they get nauseous because their stomach is not acid enough because it lacks cortisol. So there is a relation between stress and your stomach.

Also, dopamine will stop the motility of your intestines. So when you need to concentrate NOW (because of move problems for example) your dopamine might soar and your intestines refuse to accept anything your stomach needs to give them. Making your stomach upset.

I don't know how to lower dopamine. But I do know how to up its antagonist Serotonine (which makes your intestines move). That's by taking 5-HTP, the precursor to Serotonine.

This will not work instantly though, it needs to be digested first. But you might take one in the morning, to prevent?

Lastly: stress taxes your body severely, especially your adrenals, where the cortisol is made. You can help them by rest and relaxation. Until then give them salt and vitamine C: have a bottle with you containing lemon juice and lukewarm water with some salt in it. This will fortify you. (ps this lemon juice is way more diluted then the juice you take for a nauseous stomach. For the last one you are trying to acidify your stomach acid so it should be pretty strong).

good luck :)

PS you are very sweet for helping you dad with the move and helping both your parents with their health problems. :)

Remember that they too are adults and are capable of dealing with their own stuff. Or should be. You do not need to solve their problems, you can "just settle" for supporting them, especially when things take a toll on you.

Also: do not deny them the chance to experience things for themselves. Which is what you do when you solve all the problems.
