Hi to you all........I have had IBS for 6 years..........as I know many have you have as well.

I tried the food map diet and it did nothing. Have tried so many things that I am so depressed. This time the flare up has lasted six weeks. Probiotics, acid soothe , apayaacidophilus and payaya .........I just don't where to turn and I am getting more depressed everyday.

What can I do ?

In order for the FODMAP diet to work you have to be very strict with it. For example, onions are prohibited. Therefore, ketchup is also not OK as it contains "onion powder". It is also wise to work with a FODMAP trained dietician. Having said that, it is also true that it does not work for everyone, although it does work for the majority of people. You also have to take probiotics and peppermint pills very consistently.

Hi,

Could you tell us a little bit about your IBS? What symptoms do you have?

It's hard to help if we don't know anything about you.

Agree.

Did you have gastroscopy?

Have you ever checked your stomach acid level?

There is an easy home test with baking soda.

Have you tried a Holistic approach, or a Holistic Doctor? They specialize in finding the root cause and don't just spend 15 minutes with you like He Gastroenterologists do. I too get "dismissed". I think there is no cure and they haven't given up on you, but they don't have answers but "eat more fiber" "drink more water" "take stool softeners" "it's IBS" "come back in 10 years for another colonoscopy. They seem not to have the time as they are always in hospitals performing colonoscopy. I think they rarely do office visits any more and if so..they do very little, or throw medication or laxatives at you. I only have Medicare as I am on disability..so am hoping they will pay for Naturopathy, or Holistic. Have you tried a Dietician, or Nutritionist to help with food choices? Sometimes the FODMAP diet is very restrictive and doesn't work for everyone or the "low residue diet"..

It's frustrating. I hate living like this. I have no support system. My friends, or people who I thought we're my friends have up on me. I have no family. It can be a very lonely and scary situation. Right now, instead of my usual IBS-C, I have had non-stop diarrhea for four days. Everything is going right through me. Even a small amount of rice. I'm glad my case manager is taking me to dollar store tomorrow, as I am running out of toilet bowl cleaner, pine-sol and Lysol wipes. I go though toilet paper like crazy. If this goes on, will have to go to ER, because I can't get in to my Doctors office, they are booked solid. Sometimes, I get angry, sad, confused..As to why I am I suffering. Just disappoints. Hang in there, and I hope someday soon, a cure is found.

My heart goes out to you I have had IBS for more years than I can remember I'm 62. I have bad times and occasionally good spells. I have just had the worst six weeks with constant diarrhoea and bleeding. My toilet looks like an abattoir its awful. My major trigger is stress. It is almost impossible to live a stress free life so all one has to do is learn to live with it.

I cancel invitations to dinner on a weekly basis but I have good friends and an understanding husband. On prescription I take anti depressants and have done for years, Audmonal (Alverine Citrate) 60mg x 3 tablets a day. That has been great to control the spasms in the bowel. If I have to go out for a while I dose myself with Imodium Instants I am scared to leave the house without packets of it in my bag. I work from home as I would be unemployable in the work place. When you get that gripe you have to run. I too tried the Fodmap diet and it was good but when I went on holiday it went out the window. It is restrictive but keep at it I intend to go back on it soon.

I never touch onions or eat bread as they have shocking consequences. Red meat also does not suit me. I only drink water and peppermint tea, no alcohol. I have a great doctor but what they can do for you is limited. Its such an individual illness as we all get different symptoms. You worry about going out and that makes you even more stressed it is a vicious circle.

Surround yourself with good friends and supportive family and keep as calm as possible. Learn to cope and maybe one day we will grow out of it. Miracles can happen. I wish you the best of luck. Must dash loo calling!!!!! Keep a sense of humour xxx

Hi

Iv had ibs for 20 years

Without knowing your symptoms hard to recommend ways to cope

Have you seen a nutrionist available in nhs if you can't afford private

Antidepressants don't work long term for ibs or depression

The body produces chemicals to counter the drug after awhile same with ibrufen

Iv cut out bread onions all fruit peelings n veg peelings

No fizzy drinks no gassy beer

Tomatoes n oranges can be a problem and mushrooms shrimps n sultanas

Ibs can you feel so miserable not just the pain

Yoga helps a lot and I fine walking helps

If painkillers don't work on. Bad day I have a glass of ginger wine n watch my favourite comedy programmes

We are all different in our symptoms but I know stress generally makes ibs worse

And exercise n laughing help reduce stress

I hope something here helps

Iv found normacol stops me bring constipated or the D.

busco pan when bloated n

Wind ease

Mybentol for spasm n codeine if agony but not more than 3 tabs in a day as generally not good fr ibs sufferers

Keep at it some people get complete cure others like me manage to live fairly normal lives

Readymade meals are usually a no no too

Bert wishes

George Rex

I have been on Remeron (saved my life) since 1997. It still works, as well as Wellbutrin, put on it in 1999. I'm not depressed. Antidepressants do work.

Confusing you say your not depressed so why take the antidepressants

Iv friends who have gone through hell trying to get off them nightmares shaking

Headaches

Once free their fine

Very much a short term answer for the vast majority of people

Doctors prescribe because they have nothing else to offer no therapy

Months waiting to get mental counselling

Low dosage may help with ibs but the root cause isn't bring addressed

Finding the root cause isn't easy it can be food or emotional distress

S one times we bury our turmoil in emotions to cope n ibs is the affect on the body

Divorce bereavement anger resentment unforgivness can all trigger ibs

A vicious circle sometimes as the above trigger ibs and ibs makes us miserable and angry etc

Hope you find an answer

I have a friend who's ibs stopped instantly

He believed a miracle had occurred

Regards

George

I know ur pain andi4, i have had ibs since i was about 8 but noone knew what it was “

I just had a gippy belly”

My nan would say as i was rolling around on floor dying!

Now im 44 and have tried everything!

And i mean everything.

Eventually decided to really go at it and try my hardest.. and 14

Months on it kinda gone ish!!!!

So first i got good probiotics...

Not just when im ill ALL THE TIME!!!

I have a good digestive enzyme again all the time and peppermint capsules.

Then i went totally... gluten, dairy and yeast free!!!

Job done no more pain...

No onion, no garlic.

I also find alot of it is digestion...

So my body cannot digest red meat.

I also eat little and often so not big meals as ur digesetive system has to work ten times harder to digest a big meal so mayb split it up into bits. Eat abit then leave it and eat again in couple

Hours!

That what i had to do DRASTIC BUT IT WORKS AND IS RATHER DRASTIC THEN PAIN
