Gallstone/rantidine

Hi have been diagnosed with a Hiatus Hernia by Endoscopy, I then had a scan and they found a lodged gallstone, I have an appt in May to discuss all the findings.

In the meantime my GP has prescribed Omeprazole which I have now been taking for a while and it did work but lately not so much, so Monday she prescribed Rantidine to be taken along side Omeprazole.

Has anyone had side effects from Rantidine as only been taking it 3 days, once at night and it us making me so nauseous.

With regards to the gallstone my GP has referred me to the hospital for surgery to remove Gallstone but I have been speaking to people and they say that they may remove the gallbladder.

All my acid reflux symptoms might be because of this gallstone.

Would like opinion/advice from people who are going through same thing

Many thanks

Hi,

I don't have gallstones, but I do have to take a mix of ranitidine and omeprazole for acid reflux.

It may be a good idea to carry on with the ranitidine for a few more days if you can tolerate the nausea, as your system will probably get used to them and it'll subside. I had problems when I first started taking omeprazole and had to keep making wild dashes for the loo, but after several days of perseverance the problem just vanished.

I usually take one ranitidine and one omeprazole in the mornings and another ranitidine late afternoon although if I have a really bad reflux flare-up (usually due to eating the wrong thing) I add another omeprazole in the evening.

Hope this helps.

Roz

Been taking Ranitidine for years and never had any problems with it but then everyone is different how they react to medication.

Stubbsie, I take both Ranitidine and Omeprazole twice daily. I've been diagnosed with GERD more than 50 years ago, (I'm 61). I've several endoscopies over the years and the cause of my GERD is because I have a floating valve at the base of my throat that allows the acid to cause the burning associated with GERD. To combat the effects of this, I was put on bland diets but they didn't help so I was put on Ranitidine. Over the years the dosage was increased as needed to help with the burning, pain, and nausea. Eventually this wasn't working any more so I was put on Omeprazole. It took no time to see that this alone wasn't strong enough so I was put on a combination of both the Omeprazole and Ranitidine.

For nearly two years now I've been taking 300 mg of Ranitidine and 40 mg of Omeprazole twice daily. Once in the mornings and again at night. I take it nightly instead of before dinner because it allows me to sleep better. I also have raised the head of the bed about 4" to have the bed on a small incline. Both strengths have been prescribed by my doctor. As of this time, the only side effect that I've suffered because of these medicines is that these medications deplete my Vitamin B so I also take a B complex that is over the counter daily.

I've found that if I don't take both of these meds twice daily, I get chest pains and the burning of the acid in the throat so strong they can double me over.

I've had my gallbladder checked several times and it is working fine. However, in addition to the GERD, I also suffer from a Hiatal Hernia, chronic migraines/cluster headaches/headaches, chronic pain because of several work related injuries over the years. I have 7 deteriorating discs in my back/neck, 6 lowest in spine along with 1 cervical disc that are also have arthritis setting in. I've had 2 cervical disc extraction surgeries and a metal plate put in their place. I also suffer from Peripheral Neuropathy from nerve damage, mildly high blood pressure, chronic nausea from the near daily migraines/cluster headaches/headaches, along with mild Fibromyalgia. So I take a 20+ medicines both prescription strength and over the counter daily.

The only side effects I've had taking the Ranitidine and Omeprazole to my knowledge based on my doctor is the depleting of my vitamin B for which I take a B complex daily and on occasion I get B shots. My doctor requires me to have a yearly physical and we've not seen any other issues with taking 600 mg Ranitidine and 80 mg Omeprazole daily than the Vitamin B issue. I've been on the Ranitidine for more than 20 years and the Omeprazole around 2+ years.

Good luck with removal of your gallstone and or gallbladder. That may very well help with the acid reflux.
