Hi. I’ve had some bad episodes last 6 months and I’ve now found the FODMAP diet which I’m following and my belly is massively better. Anyone else tried it?
FODMAP: Hi. I’ve had some bad episodes last... - IBS Network
FODMAP
Yes, & I am also much improved. I also have started drinking some kefir with breakfast, so that may be part of it. I have been very strict with Fodmap, but tried a few florets of broccoli this week and was amazed it was OK. Next thing is to do the "testing" part, which I am scared to do. How long have you been on It?
I am on the testing phase as I found it very hard not to as I missed some things. Baked beans defo a no no for me. Broccoli is ok in small portions. I have only been on it a month or so but I’m so relieved I found it online. I never thought my belly would go back to normal size ever! I have massively cut out wheat so shreddies bread pasta etc and milk which I think has made a big difference on its own. If you do try something just try small quantities to start with and not a mix of high FODMAP ones all at once let me know how you go
I have been on it for about 3 months. My dietician told me to switch to sourdough bread. It can be a little hard to find (I am in the US) but I like it a lot -even better than plain white bread. I drink lactose free milk in modest portions and that seems to be OK. As to pasta, I tried rice pasta, but is is not really very good. Let me know how you do, too.
Hi Gaily77 I've just started with the Fomap, only a week. I am amazed to find a lot of the foods I adore are on the "don't eat" section, funny isn't it? Keep up the good work.
I've been on it for about a week. My gut seems to be a litle calmer but I guess it's early days yet.
I like the corn pasta. I made a gluten-free white bread mix and it is just about acceptable with something sweet, but toasted with Welsh rarebit there was a really nasty taste. Luckily I can get sourdough spelt bread here in the Netherlands, which is delicious.
This is my first sortie here & wanted to help with the soda bread prob.
First wanted to congratulate the Fodmap group who are doing so well.
Keep up the good work! (ie eating habits)
As I was Domestic Science teacher (when that’s what we were called in
the 60’s when I started my career) thought I’d join you & give some culinary
help if necessary.
Just wanted to congratulate the group who are doing so well, keep it up,
Re: soda bread, it couldn’t be easier to make & there are other simple alternatives to ring the changes.
Living in France I found Gerblé’s cereal loaf the neareast thing to what I was making myself (machine)until I decided I was perhaps intolerant to gluten so gave it up as well as yoghurts, (loved the Greek) but as they suddenly gave me raving diarrhoea! it was bye bye. Soon found excellent soya substitutes so am almost going vegan as lactose is the dairy villain! Wheat (which means gluten) & dairy seem to go together & there are lots of non gluten flours including a Gerblé white flour which has guar gum in it & this gives better textured baked goods. Must see if they do a cereal flour. If so I’ll be getting my bread machine out & making my own again.
Have bought all the food items mentioned in large supermarket & Bio Co-op which is the equivalent of a “health shop”. Also possible to buy on line.
All of the dietary changes I’ve made myself as no help from medics but am
going to see a specialist who is well recommended & hope she will put me in touch with a dietitian & perhaps be able to arrange some tests. To date it’s been a case of “patient heal thyself” but I found this lovely “family” site
in late summer after having a colonoscopy & being told I had no problems.
IBS is known here but as yet have to find someone who acknowledges it.
As I also have a liver disease that could be all or part of the problem & I’ve
found the British Liver Trust, which seems to be connected to this site & their forum is as friendly & helpful as this one.
NB.
Please can I alter my “code name” from the number which seems to have disappeared to read as follows. barbam86. Thank you & will give you my email address later.
I'm wary of unfermented soya, as it has been found to contain a poison affecting hormone balance and according to a study in Indonesia promoting dementia in people who consume a lot of it (vegetarians). The plant produces the poison to attack its natural 'enemy', the pigs that feed on it. Fermented soya is supposed to be OK.
So glad you are feeling better. I am on the low FODMAPS diet as well and it has helped tremendously. The diet stopped my IBS-D within 2 days. Have to strictly stick to the diet though for several weeks.
I’m just grateful I’ve found something that works. My next hospital appt isn’t for another 4 months so I’ve sorted myself out. Spicy food is just a no no for me now which is a shame
