Can a cold cause a flare up

So for a while my stomach has greatly improved - I think being on the pill has helped.

Last week I caught a nasty cold and this week I'm still not feeling my best.

Last week I had a dodgy tummy but nothing that stopped me getting on with the day. But the past two days things have got increasingly bad and even today has stopped me going out.

All I've had today so far is a cup of tea and a rich tea biscuit. Neither I have any issues with normally.

Any help or advice - I was hoping to get my 1 year old out the house for abit but doesn't look like I can today so want to be feeling better for tomorrow! I end up feeling like a terrible mother as I can't take him out as much as I want because of my stomach

Thanks

Hi Lynloo. Hard to say whether you've got a tummy bug or if it's part of the same virus that caused your cold. I do find though that if I'm run down my ibs flares. I've been having a lot of pain from a hip and shoulder problem and Im sure that's impacting on my gut even without taking pain medication. You need to stop beating yourself up about taking your little one out as that will stress you out and that definitely isn't good for your health. Easier said than done I know! Maybe if you don't feel better in a day or two it's worth seeing your gp? Really hope you feel better soon x

Thank you for your reply. I think it could be part of being run down. Not easy being ill and having a 1 year old to chase around. I spoke to my gp the other day and he's told me to "just rest"

Just got to wait it out I guess x

Looking after a baby when you're ill is so hard; I really feel for you and hope you've a good support network. I'd definitely suggest going back to your gp if you don't feel better soon. They should be able to give you something for your specific symptoms. Used to annoy me when they'd say rest when my kids were small - never could work out how to do that! 🙄😂 x

My partner is so supportive but he works all day so it is just me all day. Yeah I think I will give them a ring in the morning. It is very annoying lol. A lot of people I know assume that I don't do anything in the day and get to sit around all day 🙄 I wish! X

You are not a bad mother. Take care of yourself while you are feeling off colour, that is best for your baby and you. Do not be hard on yourself , IBS is hard enough without us beating ourselves up over it too.

Thanks :)

I'm just finding it hard to juggle both when I have a bad day. Especially as I had been so much better x

I do think when we are poorly it can affect our digestive system. Our immune system is closely linked with the gut and the bacteria in the gut. So anytime our immune system is under fire so is our gut we are more sensitive to all these goings on. Have you tried probiotics? Maybe get a flu jab for the winter ahead also x

I do take a probiotic and try eating more yogurt. Just can't seem to shake this cold and think I have a sinus infection now so feeling pretty rough so probably it's all triggered my tummy :( x
