Hi there VA80, I replied to your post which I see was 7 months ago but I still like sweetness added to my drinks, did you give up sweetener, natural or otherwise, in your drinks? I do have fruit sugar in my cupboard and have been putting a little amount in my porridge.
I drink tea and coffee with milk only, water and herbal teas. If I really want a sweet drink I have the full sugar version but only very occassionally. I believe that refined sugar, honey, etc is much better than artificial sweetener. It certainly doesn't make me as I'll. I have porridge with fresh berries and cinnamon,
Thank you VA and it does help to know what you use. Luckily enough I don't have much sweetness in porridge at all but it's the drinks I really have the problem with. What I will have to do is 'bit the bullet' and just give up any sweetness in drinks, I was discussing this when I was still at work and someone said it only takes 2 weeks and then you won't be able to tolerate sugar in drinks i.e. you won't like the sugar.
Cinnamon is a lovely spice, I also add chopped almonds.
I have had IBSd for over 40 years.......I know how frightened you will get and I know how you probably don't like to keep going to the Doctor, You will have been told to try various diets that usually make it worse and cause more stress, which in itself doesn't help at all.
If you haven't already had the tests done, I would suggest you ask your GP for a colonoscopy, which will immediately ease some of the stress when the result comes back. As you've had this for 15 years it is unlikely to be what you are worrying about.
Then, just try to eat small amounts perhaps more than three times a day. My Consultant told me to try that and it worked for me. If there is something that exacerbates the problem then avoid it but don't fall into the trap of avoiding everything.......yes, it can happen. Isogel is good way of managing the diarrhea (or fibre gel). I have just about cracked it now....after 40 years of misery. So, get the tests to make sure all is okay, then focus on eating however suits you, no overeating, try to relax, be patient and very good luck to you. You are not alone.
Have you tried digestive enzymes?? I had 15 years of what you are experiencing too, it would come on about 10-15 minutes after eating, the pain would be so intense I would often vomit which seemed to help bring on the explosion. Since taking digestive enzymes I have not had a single attack or even a slight bit of discomfort. For me they worked from the very first time I took them, but I have heard others say it has taken a week for them to get results. I can't say enough about how greatful I am that I found them. They have given me back my quality of life.
I have taken lots and lots of different brands now and can honestly say that they have all worked for me. I have found iherb to be economical and reliable and they have a huge selection at various price points and have both vegan and animal based options. I have had equal success with the $7 bottles as I have had with $40+ bottles I don't have a favourite brand but personally I like to buy the animal based ones that have ox bile and glandulars, that's just me, the experts say that vegan enzymes work best due to ability to work across a broader ph range. Read through some reviews online and check ingredients etc to find one you like the look of. I'm so happy I found them
Oh sorry I should have clarified, iherb isn't a brand, it's an online retailer. They sell thousands of different brands and ship them worldwide. I just found them to have the best prices. For examplè I Purchased a solaray product on iHerb for $7 and bought the same product on eBay and paid $35. It pays to shop around.
Hi there, it's actually a nonsense to take medication for IBS, it will worsen your problems over time, i speak out of experience, had IBS (diagnosed by "reductio ad absurdum" only after all my tests, and they were many, were all negative) over a 5 years period (think it was triggered, maintained and accentuated by overwhelming stress, poor diet and lack of exercise) by the end of which period i literally thought I will die. I healed myself last year, in a short period of 3 months, by avoiding any type of medication (not even an aspirin), avoiding any type of medical doctor, changing my diet to a raw organic vegetarian one and exercising everyday for at least 30 minutes. YOUR BODY IS SMART, IT WILL HEAL ITSELF, YOU JUST HAVE TO LET IT WORK AND DO NOT INTERFERE STUPIDLY!!! Since then I feel much stronger, have an outstanding physical and psychological stamina, my digestion got back to normal (after horrifying diarrhea bouts) and life is wonderful again! No more IBS - by eradicating the root causes of it, and not trying to repress the symptoms... This guy helped me a lot, with his short explanations, he made me change my lifestyle and although I do not personally know him, I am very thankful I got over him on Youtube accidentally... life changing experience if you suffer from a dis-ease and do not know the REAL causes... hope it helps you too: youtu.be/MYKdLeL3SGo
No, enzymes are not medication, but immodium is as well as antiinflamatories, antibiotics and so on... when you have a healthy lifestyle with healthy digestion, you do not need enzymes either...
Maybe in the past, there are a lot more adverse environmental factors now that negatively impact the available nutrition in our food, unless you grow your own food and eat it straight from the tree/ground most of the enzymes are dead by the time you consume it. In an ideal world you would get everything you needed from healthy eating alone. It just isn't a feasible option to most people to eat 100% fresh organic food and avoid environmental toxins.
I was lucky, from where I come from you can get fresh organic foods from local markets and they are very cheap...
Enzyme tablets are not replacing healthy eating either, because they are containing the most important ones only: amylase, lypase, protease... but there are several other enzymes as well you get only from fresh food only.
No they can't replace, that's impossible, but they do help an already struggling digestive system absorb more nutrient content from their food that would otherwise be lost as undigested waste
