Everything I have read points to onions being a trigger- that and garlic. I get spasms in my food pipe where acid comes back out my stomach and the pain is horrendous!! And I stopped eating quite a lot of foods that trigger this ages ago!! Been 18 months since my last bad attack but I've had a few near misses so to speak!! . I agree Being sick is usually the thing that stops it being so bad! No pills help it. I was told we all produce acid at different amounts and I probably over produce it. Was basically told go away and find foods you can eat and avoid the ones you can't. I think it's just a learning curve as an individual as to what helps and what triggers our reactions.
