Hi, I posted on here over a year ago now about my IBS and the discomfort I get upon waking. Just to recap I've been waking early (4.30, 5.00) and almost immediately feel unwell (bit nauseous and feeling like you're ready to poo). Then have to wait until I'm really ready to go (get this wrong sometimes and try too early which doesn't result in complete movement) Around that time I consulted a gastroenterologist who didn't give me much guidance. Things must have settled down for quite a while but having the same problem again (probably fired off by stress). I saw another gastro guy who suggested try Fybogel and I'm seeing a Dietician soon to get their view.

Anyone else had/ has similar problems to me and any advice on whether Fybogel or diet has helped. He also mentioned Mebeverine which may be worth trying

Thanks

Hi David, I had terrible IBS, life a complete misery, was even considering changing my job or even having to retire because of it, going 6 to 7 times a day. Then I was prescribed Fybogel, the powder you add water to, not the tablets. It was a complete life saver. Regulated me to once a day almost from day one and I stayed on it for a year as it's a natural product. Been off it now for almost 8 months and haven't had a recurrence of IBS since. For me it was a total life saver. Hope it works for you.

Hiya. Thanks a lot for your reply. It's good to hear it worked well foe you. I've just started one powder once a day. I've not had your problem of multiple visits it's the uneasy feeling for that long time between early waking and eventually going. Difficult to make plans for the morning as well. Hopefully the fybogel will help. I'm also going to see a Dietician to see of she can shed any light on it. Take care

Ugh...I know about those early (usually TOO early) morning awakenings where everything feels as if it's going south, and that awful creepy, absolutely no-fun almost-nausea sensation which I can never work out if it's due to not enough sleep or an uneasy gut.

I know nothing about drugs that might help, so hope others will know.

But I tell you what I do whenever those nasty morning things get me.

I get up, wash my face, brush my teeth and wake up for a few minutes, then come downstairs, put on my favourite music radio station, and make a coffee.

The music grounds me a bit, so does going outside. Getting cold water on my face helps freshen me up and dispel the "almost-nausea" morning gloom and slight fear of what my gut is getting up to.

Coffee stimulates peristalsis. Now I have IBS D so you'd think that would be a terrible idea for me, but oddly it doesn't usually end up with me having a bad flare up of the "D". It can even end up in a perfectly normal bowel movement.

What it does, is it defines quite well when a bowel movement is required, so there's no messing about.

I have a weird situation (probably a form of IBS mixed or alternating. Not sure) So some mornings I feel off but have absolutely no natural urge to "go". And all I want is to get it over with and get on with my day.

And just having a coffee and a little stroll in the garden to feed the birds first thing (well before any food) seems to define that a bit better and gives me the natural urge to go.

It seems to help me a lot anyway. I don't take my coffee too bitter or too strong and drink it neat (black and nothing added.) I usually have one and a half cups each morning, except during a very bad D flare up.

As for sleep deprivation,. maybe you can go back to bed for a nap after the deeds are done. Or I find I'll make up for it the following night, so it's only one day of feeling a bit tired.

Thanks for your reply. It's strange that when I've spoken to GPs and even Gastroenterologists they say they've not had patients with this early morning issue but more than one has mentioned it on this forum. I'm trying this Fybogel for a couple of weeks (one a day just started) and quitting snacks in the evening and see how I go. Got the Dietician appt. soon so be interested to see what she says. I think a lot to do with it is stress/ anxiety. I don't relax very well! Take care

I am sure there are many variations in IBS symptoms for people with IBS. That very early morning thing you mention doesn't happen a lot to me, but can occasionally, and oddly that was something I got 3 or 4 times for about 18 months even before my IBS began a few years ago. I remember waking up suddenly with uneasy gut feelings, it was still dark so I had to take a torch to the bathroom (no leccy in there!), Sure I was going to have some bad upset stomach even though I hadn't eaten anything weird and cook hygienically etc. I also felt a bit shaky and a vague feeling like nausea.

Then when I got there I couldn't even go. My body was telling me it was too early. So I just got going into my day and after a coffee and going outside in the dawn, I was fine again, got a normal feeling to go to the bathroom, then it was a perfectly normal experience. I could never understand what was going on when that happened. I felt too hot too, but when I took my temperature it was only 36.4

And I always felt fine in the day except a bit tired from getting up too early

Yes Luisa, that's exactly the same as what I've been experiencing. If its not that I wake early feeling like I'm full of wind but I don't release a lot and it keeps me awake for hours. Have you experienced that also?

During the day I hardly release any wind at all. It all seems to come out when I first get up in the morning, and I mean LOADS. Like a whole day's lot of wind all at once. But no it doesn't keep me awake and I generally sleep pretty well nowadays except very occasionally might have a bad night but that's rare. I do sometimes get trapped wind though. Not often but that hurts

Thanks. I'll keep experimenting with diet until I see the dietician. I've had it before as I said so hopefully it won't be long standing

Hiya. Have you had it long or does it come and go?

Yes quite a few years (I am 84 )

Seems some people are just prone to it but I'll see what I can do to limit the worse bits

Only relatively recently diagnosed with IBS but I've been taking mebeverine for a few weeks now and I seem to be much better.

I wake up very early but that's mainly having young children and always having been a bad sleeper. I don't wake up feeling nauseous etc but I do tend to have achey/crampy abdomen.

Since taking mebeverine and ibuprofen I've been noticeably better but part of that is feeling mentally better too I think - I've been very worried about what my symptoms could be.

I've forgotten to take the mebeverine for a couple of days here and there and I've had abdominal cramps the day after. Gonna keep taking it and cross my fingers. Hope you get sorted

Thanks for your reply. Its good to get others input. The Med was prescribed if the fybogel didn't have any effect. Did you have any constipation issues with the med and ibuprofen?

Bit delayed coming back to you - sorry.

I stopped taking mebeverine a week or so ago to see if there was any noticeable difference in how I feel. If anything I actually feel less crampy, although back ache has increased a bit.

I can't say for certain whether these things are related to mebeverine but since I'm feeling better without it I'm planning on continuing without.

Thanks for getting back. I saw a Dietician who works with ibs clients and she recommended a higher fibre intake and changing cereal to oat based. I now take fibrogel as part of my diet. Since this change I've not been waking up very early as before and digestive system more stable. My early waking has been replaced by not being ableto get off to sleep which is probably more coincidental. On meds for that now!
