There the same as immodiam?? They won't prevent it? It'll help in an attack depending on ur ibs but not prevent?

I think so, if I take two in advance will it bung me up more throughout the day?? An if I watch what I eat

I have been on loperamide Hydrocloride 2mg since 2004, that is when i was diagnosed with I.B.S D at first they were great helping to control the bowel but further down the line my body was getting used to them so i had to take more to keep the motions under control. i now take the maximum does im aloud to take that is 8 and it sometimes controls it some times it's depends on what i have eaten, and what i am doing but for a while it has been ok but i always carry tablets with me just as a precaution. as well as watch what i am eating as well so what u wanna do is monitor the times and what your eating that is what did, so i now know what i can and can't eat.

Okay thank you Allan, I am just very worried as I have my work induction 8am-2pm monday- Wednesday, I am doing night shifts as that is when my IBS is alright an it won't be as busy so if I do need to go it won't be as bad. I am just praying I am OK for those 3 day shifts as I'll be so embarrassed an feel like they will regret hiring me, I am just going to watch what I eat the night before an then try an go as much as I can in the morning taking my loperamide after each movement then drink a lot of water throughout the induction so I can go the next day again an not be bunged up

AllanLockyer profile image
AllanLockyer in reply toLucyjanexx

little tip for you is to take 4 tablets before you go to your induction and you should be fine for two of the days and then ont the 3rd day take the same again and you should be fine for another 24-48 hours. depending on where your working you can carry your medication with you as i worked in a large supply ware house where we was not allowed to take anything on the factory floor but i spoke to the staff and i had a letter off the medical person that was on duty at the time and i was allowed to carry my medication and have breaks when i needed them providing that i had the letter on me at all times when on shift.

That's a really good idea thanks I willtry that an pray I am okay for them 3 days! I will qworry less once I am used to it, its in a care home so they should be more understanding, I'll just keep the medication in my pocket throughout the day. Thank you so much. I am just worried incase they judge me an regret hiring me in the first place! Even though that would be very prejudice

totally agree that is where the disability discrimination act comes in.

Also I think my IBS D happens because I am a very anxious person too, I think sometimes I make it happen by constantly worrying when I forget about it I tend to always be okay so its the anxiety side of it to as I am afraid to leave the house some days

Like you if i go to a new place that i don't know as i have to plan where the toilets are and are they accessible as well. I get anxious and that can set it off as well, it is very annoying for me as well. so it is not very nice when some times it stops people from doing things they enjoy as they have had an attack of Diarrahea.

Lucyjanexx profile image
Lucyjanexx in reply toAllanLockyer

It is really annoying isn't it, I just wish I could do things without having to plan an just enjoy. I wouldn't wish IBS on anyone its awful

AllanLockyer in reply toLucyjanexx

i wouldn't either it effect people's lives all the time

Lucyjanexx in reply toAllanLockyer

Its nice to talk to people who have similar problems on here too makes you feel like you aren't the only one suffering! I just wish I wasn't bothered about what people think if I have a flare up an I'd probably have less frequent attacks

AllanLockyer profile image
AllanLockyer in reply toLucyjanexx

The worse one i had was both the male public toilets were in use so i couldn't wait so i had to use the toilet so i used the disabled one as that was the only other accessible toilet available to myself so i was on my way out of the toilet and a lady in a wheelchair was waiting to use the toilet and as soon as she put eyes on me her first words was you shouldn't be you using these toilets as they are for disabled people not able body people. so i politely said to her that yes i have a disability and yes i can use the toilet the same as you, you can see your disability but you can't see mine as mine is Ibs d. and she couldn't answer me apart from saying sorry and i finished by saying you have a nice day and walked off. People are so Judgemental without knowing the facts first. i hate that.

I totally agree isn't it so annoying! Do you have any tips of how you cope? Any at all I'm open to any new ideas

Hi lucyjane

I take loperamide when I have diorrhea, it's not a preventative treatment but is very effective. Do you find certain foods are a trigger?. To help with anxiety I can recommend mindfulness meditation. You can have a go for free for ten days on the headspace website, then sign up if you want to continue. Or the calm app is very good along similar lines. Good luck for coping with work these next few nights. X

Hello misty, how many do you take after diarrhea?? I tend to always have diarrhea anyway so hopefully tablets stop me from needing to go anymore!! If I have foods that have high fibre or fatty foods it is a big trigger, I tend yo just eat plain meals lately to stop flare ups which has helped. Yeah that sounds good! I'll give it a try, thank you so much x

Hi lucyjane

The dosage on the box says one to be taken three times a day, no more than eight in 24 hours. It can vary how much I need to take. I didn't realise they were Imodium so I've learnt something. It's good you've found triggers in your diet and have found improvement by cutting them out. You might be able to re- introduce them slowly after a while!. Good luck with work. X

I have had these on prescription for over 25 years. I am told they are safe as they do not go into your blood stream. Even though they are to treat an attack you can take one or two before traveling or a stressful day. I do find if you can leave off them until you really need them they are more effective. Only thing I find is they make you pee more so keep up the fluids. Good luck.

Lucyjanexx profile image
Lucyjanexx in reply toWhoopdedoo

Ah good I am glad they are safe!! Okay good I will do that before my shift next week, when I have taken diarrhea tablets in the past I've found that if I don't drink enough I am constipated the next day so I will keep fluids up. Thank you so much for your advise! X

It's a shame that the doctor can't tell you this at the time. Find out what triggers it too without giving up everything. Good luck.

I have IBS-D and have cut out bad food including wheat & dairy. I have started on the live probiotic SYMPROVE 12 week programme for (£150) and this is helping re-build internal gut flora. I have massively cut down on fried food, alcohol and lactose heavy products, like whey powder and the really dodgy substance glucose-fructose syrup. You may have malabsorption issues with a type of food. I am feeling much better and starting to reduce my worry about long work meetings. Good luck!

Ya am convinced you have bile acid malabsorption you will not need any other medication except colestryamaine there is a test Sachet test this is done over a week you have a scan then the following week another scan this tests how your bowels are working, after this you will know that your condition is due to bile acid malabsorption you will get your life back

without a resticted diet ..these pills won't prevent an attack (at least for me) ..so they work pretty well if taken on an empty stomach at least one hour before eating ..then must stick to the (Safe foods ) which you know in advance they are OK for you (it differes from person to person ) Good luck .

Hi Lucy, loperamide or brand name immodium are anti-diahhorhea tablets & work by slowing down movement of stools thru' the gut. They will stop d. quickly & relieve stomach cramps. Make sure u drink water when taking them. See other posts about pre/pro- biotics. Good luck

Lucyjanexx profile image
Lucyjanexx in reply toshaughnessy

Thank you!

They may not be effective

Have you tried changing your diet to control your symptoms ?

Lucyjanexx profile image
Lucyjanexx in reply to

Yeah I'm unsure which foods set it off though

Try leaving one food group at a time out of your diet for at least 2/3 weeks keeping a food and symptom diary to see what changes there might be. Try dairy first, you can substitute Alpro milk and yogurt and Pure spread which can be used in all cooking and definitely no cheese

Lucyjanexx profile image
Lucyjanexx in reply to

If I have to much cheese that deffo sets it off an onions an garlic!! That's a good idea though I will try it thanks xx

I take imodium to help prevent an attack and they help most of the time but when things get really bad they don't help as much.
