IBS D

Hi, I’ve suffered with mixed ibs for 7 years but having a really bad flare up last few months of ibs D. So I’ve been taking Imodium for 2 days a week while I’m at work, which has helped to slow it down. But about 5 days after I’ve had the Imodium I have explosive diarrhoea! Is that because the Imodium has stopped it or could this be something else?

Many Thanks

It may be because Imodium has constipated you and liquid food is getting backed up behind impacted stool and then coming out with force like with overflow diarrhoea.

I did think that too. But I’ve seen my GP this morning and he didn’t seem to think it was that as even though I take Imodium I still go to the toilet just not as bad. They are referring me to Gastro, so hopefully get some answers 🙏 Thank you for your reply x

I think you ought to get it checked out in case it's a bug or something similar or even an intolerance to something in your diet.

Yes I’ve been to GP today and they’re referring me to Gastro x

Good, I started with IBS after food poisoning, then became gluten intolerant, later lactose intolerant, it's as well to have all the tests etc although they aren't pleasant, hope you're not waiting too long. I'm surprised your GP didn't ask for a stool sample to check for any nasties.

That’s spooky, my IBS also started after food poisoning 7 years ago! Yes I’m surprised they haven’t asked for a stool sample too as they have previously. I’m using my husbands medical insurance so hopefully I won’t have to wait too long for an appointment 🤞

I try to avoid Imodium for that very reason, but there are times when it’s unavoidable. My IBS (if it is that) has flared up this week, and will be discussing with GP tomorrow - had to cancel the same restaurant booking for the second time in a row!

I feel your pain 😔 I’ve been to the GP today and he’s referring me to Gastro to make sure nothing else isn’t going on other than the ibs.

You need to gradually decrease the immodium

Do you mind explaining more as I’ve only been taking Imodium for the last 2 weeks just for 2 days per week?
