Hello, am new to the site, joined today lol.

I saw a consultant this morning as my IBS had flared up badly over last 6 months, plus a stool sample came up positive for inflammation. As soon as he saw that I take anti-inflammatories, he said that was the cause of the positive test as they can cause irritation & inflammation. However I still need to have a colonoscopy to be on the safe side.

You will be fine, I used to work in an endoscopy unit & we did almost all our gastroscopies without sedation. They stop the gag reflex by spraying the back of your throat with local anaesthetic, which most patients said was the worst bit, they like you to be awake because if you can try & swallow the scope it can make it easier, the doctors have done many many proceedures, so are very good at what they do.

I know it sounds scary having both ends done on the same day, but I have seen plenty of people who have had both ends done at once, they will probably start at the top & then give you the sedation for the bottom end. They have all been absolutely fine & you have the bonus of getting it all over at the same time, no having to go back. Hope you get on ok 🙂

Welcome. I had to have both cameras on the same day and it sent my anxiety through the roof because I have emetophobia. I've had two colonoscopy without sedation and I wouldn't recommend it as it can be quite painful and uncomfortable. You won't be sick as they numb your throat with a spray which tastes like banana vodka lol and your stomach is empty anyway.

The hospital cannot refuse you sedation and have to offer it. I had my gastroscopy first, I laid on my side, they sprayed my throat and as they did that they sedated me so can't remember a thing until they turned me around to do the colonoscopy. The sedation they give you is good because you can still do what your told even though your not aware. You will have one nurse with you that will stay with you throughout both procedures and please tell them if your worried about anything as they are there to help.

I had a gastroscopy and straight away had the colonoscopy so I was sedated at the beginning and I didn't even know they'd done the gastroscopy - you do need to be aware and follow instrctions that you're given

The throat one is fine, just a bit weird. They numb the back of your throat with a spray then you do swallowing so you don't gag. I had to sit on my hands though!

Colonoscopy (had another one yesterday) is a bit of a bloody nuisance with all of the prep (advise you to apply barrier/nappy rash cream before taking the strong laxatives!). It varies a lot from person to person but there are sedatives and gas /entonox to help with the discomfort.

Both in the same day is fine and at least you only have one set of starving etc to do.

Get it over and done with. Good luck 🙂

Insist on sedation if that's what you want I did about 5 years ago

I have had both cameras but not in the same day. I had a gastroscopy last week with sedation. Although there was some gagging, which didn't worry me because of the sedation, I wasn't sick as your stomach has to be empty before the test. You can ask for sedation if you are particularly nervous. You will have one for the colonoscopy anyway so if they are being done at the same time you will already be sedated.

I have had both but not on the same day. Don't forget its your body and if you're not comfortable without sedation then insist on it. The sedation doesn't send you to sleep but relaxes you which makes it easier on you with less anxiety before and on the day. It is such a light dose that there won't be an issue with being sedated twice.
