I've had chronic diarrhea for 18 months. My colonoscopy came up clear. Specialist says it's IBS. I believe it started when I was prescribed sertraline. It was a side effect I thought would go away but never did. I am trying to wean myself off Sertraline and hope the damage is reversible. Having the runs is exhausting, dehydrating, and so very embarrassing.

It is very embarrassing when out in public, I've virtually stopped going out. Thank you for your message. I do hope you get well soon

Hey Sweetie, how horrid for you. My thoughts are with you. Xx

I too had a really bad time with diarrhoea and ibs. Still do from time to time... I had a SeCHat test which shows I have bile salt acid malabsorption (BAM) amongst other things.

The test is easy... you swallow a radioactive marked synthetic bile salt and see how much is reabsorbed or lost by the body in 7 days. Less than 15% reabsorbtion indicates bile salt malabsorption.

I now take colesevelam twice daily, this binds the bile salts in the stomach and gut and prevents lots of runny:watery poo.

There is a Doctor at Imperial College, London called Professor Julian Walters. He has done loads of research on BAM and how to manage it. Worth a look to see if it applies to your symptoms.

Hope that helps you

Thank you for your message, I will speak to my doctor about this test. I pray for it to stop so I can have a normal life, I know there is so many so worse off so I try and stay positive.

The BAM test sounds interesting and might help others in this forum. Thanks for posting about it.

In the meantime you could try silicolgel which stops my diarrhoea. It's in Boots and Holland and Barrett. I'm not as bad as you but when an attack is triggered I can control the diarrhea with silicolgel and go out as usual. I take it for stress and anxiety related IBS and have to take it before meetings, going out, eating out etc or I'd never leave the house without worrying about an attack. It's been amazing for me.

Thank you for your message, I will definitely try this. I'm going to get some today 😊

You need to go back to your GP to get hospital tests to check for any other bowel condition

Hi, I am still under the doctor, if this last test comes back normal he is going to refer me to the hospital.

Yes, ibs can be that severe. I think you need to eat more eggs in your diet. Apparently they 'bind you up' which means they harden your stools and they might help you. Also, keep away from too many yoghurts, smoothie type drinks, and too much liquid. I know that seems to fly in the face of good healthy diet where you are told to drink at least two litres of liquid a day, but remember many foods have water in them too. I think you should ask your doc to refer you to the dietician in your local hospital and see what they can do to help you.

Good luck.

Have you had a colonoscopy done? It sounds very similar to me before I was (eventually) diagnosed with collagenous colitis - nothing showed up on any tests - I had two attacks each lasting around 12 weeks (Lost 3 stone each time) - now I get it more often but for shorter periods - just think it might be something worth exploring - as it happens during the 1st attack I also stopped eating wheat / gluten and although it was a "bit" of a red herring to the immediate problem - I did see 75 to 80% of my eczema clear up

Hope you get some answers - I know how distressing it is when nothing works

Hi, I haven't had one yet but my doctor says if this last test is normal he is going to refer me for the camera. Thank you for your message.

From what I can gather - if you get a consultant referral - mind did a flexible sigmoidoscopy first - could have saved a lot of hassle if he had gone straight to the colonoscopy (although there may be other members who can identify the benefits for the fs)

It's funny how we forget things - I was just watching a video on this- I know they tend to over extend the bad side - but I used to take pro and pre-biotics if I had a bad stomach and knew I'd eaten some gluten or my tummy was playing up and no question it did help - never went abroad without it - so definitely worth exploring and given me a kick

I've suffered from chronic ibs-d for over 10 years. I take loperamide every morning to help me thru the day and when it's been really bad I've been perscribed codine.

I can't advise you on what foods to try or avoid as everyone's triggers are different.

make sure you drink plenty of water I find room temp water easier on my tummy than cold. 😊

Hi, My doctor has just prescribed me codine, I'm currently trying to get him to refer me to a specialist, he doesn't seem to be rushing its very frustrating.

Hi Tray, Keep reading you will see just how bad it can be , and worrying and stress makes it soooo much worse, Check my posts ,its been 50 some years for me. And been diagnosed as mostly a Phobia, a mind thing, along with IBS-D the more you worry the worse it is. The Mind can do terrible things to us. If we could just learn how, I mean REALLY learn how to control our thoughts, wouldn't it be fantastic. Thats part of why people take so many Drugs, Just to find some kind of relief from all the FEAR, PANIC, and ANXIETY. And DEPRESSION too. And Maybe just to be able to go shopping or out to Eat (which I can NEVER do, Cuz I get an instant stomach ache worrying about having to run to the bathroom ) I spend most of my time alone, I have hours and hours of alone time I'm a widow and its hard to find friends at 68, and with this condition. What do I say.... HI wanna be my friend ?? I can't go out to eat or to movies, or basically any form of intertainment ????? :( But for me, On the plus side...I have a wonderful Son, and two great Grandkids 15 and 19, so I have them to talk to or visit with, all together on a daily basis, that covers Maybe a half hour a day, some days a little more. So Guess how much time I have alone .... with my kitties. One inside, two outside, sleep in the garage strays, and Several WILD feral cats that I just feed, You don't get to get close to them . SOOOOO.......... We all will get through these terrible things we have to deal with, in one way or another, we'll change our live stiles, and adjust the way we live, and have our happy times and crazy stress filled bad times. Good luck to all of us, if anyone can find a cure, PLEASE let us ALL no :) In the mean time just remember your not alone there are soooo many of us out there suffering right along with you :(
