Can't wear trousers due to pain and bloating.

Hi I just wanted to find out if anyone else has the same problem. This has got worse for me for the past few years, but I can't bear wearing anything around my waist like trousers or tights of any sort as it ends up with me really uncomfortable. I feel like I bloat up and could burst and get pain too. I can't think straight and don't feel hungry. I look pregnant. Once I take trousers off it eases and I feel better, I still have the problem but is manageable. So the main problem is I don't know what to wear. At home I wear long dresses with socks but it means I hate leaving the house. I wear like a jumpsuit to work with no waistband and a top over to hide the top part. I feel such an unattractive loser. I dread seeing people and going out. All I want is to wear normal clothes. I have tried leggings, joggers, loose tights rolled down but within minutes end up crippled.

Anyone else have this ? Dr not interested and I have tried

Mebeverine

Buscopan

Peppermint

Ranitidine

Hypnosis

Homeopathy

fodmap diet. (Which made me much worse)

Feel like giving up not sure what else to do! Any ideas??

Rich72, what you have said is how I have felt on lots of occasions- it's so annoying espically when going out somewhere and you want to wear say some jeans and like you have said you can't because it's just uncomfortable and I feel like a ballon. I do find if this does happen espically when I want to wear jeans , I will wear like a loose fit casual top as it hides my stomach/ bloating but also makes me feel a little better as I still can wear my jeans but yes totally agree it's frustrating when this happens, and I myself don't know what to do at times. My ibs is currently flared up again - bloating , stomach making noises ( gulging) and burping, just some of my symptoms that I am experiencing at the moment again.

Sorry for the long reply, hope I haven't rubbled on.

At times ive been like that myself so i can empathise. I now have a wardrobe which consists of a range of clothes to fit all sizes it makes it a bit easier except when i want to wear a particular thing and im having a 'fat' day.

This is so like me. Have 2 sizes I wear. Just depends how bloated I am. Can't seem to find anything really that causes the fat uncomfortable tummy.

You don't say if you have seen a gastrologist . If not ensure you are referred to one. You need to find out what triggers this. Endlessly taking different medications is, in my opinion, not the answer as they are short term only.

Hi, you really must insist that you are referred to a gastrointestinal specialist!! Ibs can be a monster, but you need to rule things out.

Hi there,

Everything you have said here is the same for me.

I now wear 2 different size clothing . One week I can wear a size 12 but when it's really bad I then wear size 14 n afraid tosay it's getting to be more of the larger size !!

Tried most of the same meds as you but do find peppermint oil ( the drinkable one not massage one ) few drops in small glass of warm water as a drink is really soothing.

Also take baby's medicine for colicky type pains n bloating. Just treble the amount and take as directed on bottle. Very gentle on the tummy.

I try ANYTHING... Just need to find what gives you some relief

Good luck.

I am in the early stages of what ever this is. I have had an EGD and an MRI with contrast. they found nothing but gave me meds. I don't want meds without finding out whats wrong. Is that wrong. Peppermint is my best friend

Peppermint can be soothing because it relaxes the esophageal sphincter and can Aid in normal digestion. However, it is really bad for GERD and not healthy for the stomach! I was really surprised to learn this because I've drank it my whole life to help soothe

Re this issue of clothes difficulty......as well as lifelong IBS, I developed upper gut pain in my late 50s which at the time was diagnosed as gastritis/duodenitis. However in recent years the pain and bloating continued (some 10 years on) and have been re-diagnosed as having Functional (non ulcer) dyspepsia and this pain makes clothes with tight waists as difficult as IBS issues. I wonder if some with diagnosis of IBS in fact have this as well, as it's seen as a similar issue to IBS.

My solution......all my trousers are bought in a size bigger and I put an extra button on them - one right on the edge of the seam and the original one, which I can sometimes wear when I am walking around. When I am sat down, I usually undo the buttons entirely! I have bought maternity leggings in the biggest size which I wear with loose tops. If I wear a skirt I will buy a longish skirt and wear with long socks, as even large tights are not comfortable.

Hiya

I feel your pain literally. I tend to wear leggings and loose dresses most of the time. Would love to wear my skinnies again though .

I have mentioned before , my allergist advised me to cut dairy, sugar, yeast, caffeine, apples, oranges and bananas. No easy task but I have to say it really helped even my pmt symptoms did nt occur. I noticed I did nt need laxatives too. Been pretty naughty lately and back to bloat so back on wagon for me. Maybe worth you going to a nutritianist , see if they pick up on anything. Good luck.

Hi - what is the best way to get intolerance test, are they accurate? I am a bit sceptical of some of the information out there.

I have had celiac test, but dr won't do lactose intolerance test.

I have no dairy, limited bread, daily probiotic.

Would like to identify suspect foods, as elimination diets have not helped before.

Thanks for your reply

my naturopathic Center is who told me about the various test like that and carried them

Thank you so much for all you replies - it is so good to know I'm not alone. I'm sure it's nothing 'serious' as Dr keeps telling me, but it does affect my life quite a lot, so it's not trivial.

I was feeling a freak, but now I know I am not the only one - AND thanks for all the tips, I will try food intolerance testing, and see what happens, as well as going back to the dr.

thanks and fingers crossed for some help

Thanks you have convinced me to find a local intolerance tester. After all, I would rather find the cause of my problems than have invasive tests which will probably come back 'fine' - i have had the problems so long, I'm sure it's nothing 'serious' but I can tell you it is miserable nontheless!!!

Before my naturopath I had a lot of specialist and my gastrointestinologist didn't even tell me about this or bring it up. It was so frustrating to go through so much and then my first visit with the naturopathic Center brought it up right away

hi

How long did you try FODMAP diet? Were you stressed at the time?

I GET BLOATING AT TIMES AND TROUSERS DONT HELP BUT I USUALLY FIND IF I HAVE BUSCOPAN ,AND WINDEZE AND ALSO EAT SOMETHING THE BLOATING GO'ES.

Sorry for caps

hope this helps

in reply tograhamrupertrules

Thanks, I tried fod map for about ten days but I got so constipated it was terrible and I felt grim with it. I think food is key it's just finding what is the problem!! Buckland is good but never thought of windeze so might give that a try.

Thanks again

Hi I take normacol a fibre friendly for IBS.stops me getting constipated as I eat very little fibre from foods.mainly a fodmap diet.need lots of water when on a low fibre diet at least two pints n other drinks.hope this is helpful.regards gff

I wore jeans to work the other day with a leather belt and quite a large buckle, they were quite low waist jeans so they pressed into my lower abdomen especially the buckle, I started to get symptoms driving to work and had to run to the toilet, then all day I had issues back and forth to the toilet with sudden diarrhoea :-(

I don't usually wear that sort of thing as it's usually leggings and some sort of dress or tunic (I'm a bit overweight and often bloated so low waist usually not flattering for me), but I find loose and stretchy is better. Hope you find something to help you xxx

have you been tested for sibo? I recently have and have it I'm in the middle of treatment. I'm experiencing the same sensitivity and I really hope it goes away. That might not be related though call me when I had a colonoscopy I could feel the scope even with all the drugs and so it could be some nerve thing. So far I doctor hasn't been able to give me a good answer

Did you ever find a solution? You're symptoms sounds a lot like what I've been dealing with for the last year. I've been to 3 doctors. I've tried lactose and gluten free diets.

I just ran across this thread from 3 years ago. I'm getting desperate for help.

Please let me know if you found anything to help with the chronic bloating and pain.

I too just came across this. I've long since accepted I can't wear things on my waist and suffered with terrible cramping for years until low rise jeans became fashion and I noticed I could wear those without pain. Ever since then I've rolled down all trousers tights etc very low and wore a long top to cover up.

I'm 47 and it's been like this since puberty, maybe earlier. Only discovered this pain free solution in my early 30's. However, the rolled down trousers can still cause probs if they don't sit right in my groin. I eventually realises everything has to be elasticated and stretchy too. I just accepted it back then as I was just happy to be pain free

Hi! I too have this problem and have had it since puberty but I am 22. I can only wear dresses now not even trousers rolled down. Do you have any other advice? How are things now? I am going out of mind trying to work out what to do!

Emily7171 profile image
Emily7171 in reply toCharlie2w

The trousers I roll down can't be tight ones that are the fashion atm so it's difficult to find ones that are ok so the tightness can't be anywhere in the hips or anything.

So it's the same as it's always been. No change Nothing can touch. Dresses are good. Food changes makes no difference.

Hey Emily thanks so much for replying! So sorry to hear you are still suffering with this. Have you been diagnosed with IBS? and not sure if this is too personal but i suffer more from constipation than anything else so I don't know if this is all IBS related. Is this similar with you?

Emily7171 profile image
Emily7171 in reply toCharlie2w

I certainly have a sluggish bowel and so have to look after things there re constipation but I still get griping pain from trousers with or without it. But don't forget, I don't suffer with this as I just don't wear anything that touches my belly. 🙂👍

Emily7171 profile image
Emily7171 in reply toCharlie2w

As in its been so many decades now that I manage it I guess by just not doing stuff to aggravate it. Anything on belly is simply out if the question. I don't fight it. Not worth it. X

I forgot yes they said IBS in my 20's x

Charlie2w profile image
Charlie2w in reply toEmily7171

Ah I see! I seem to still aggravate it regardless of whether I'm wearing loose clothes or not. Have you ever experienced any pain with wearing Bras too? They also trigger my abdomen, even loose bras. And have periods ever been a problem for you? It seems to get worse during this time

Emily7171 profile image
Emily7171 in reply toCharlie2w

I've had had heavy periods in my time but not always.

Can't wear underwire bras but they don't set bowel off, just my anatomy makes them very uncomfortable even if professionally fitted.

Hi! I have had this problem for a couple years. I was diagnosed with IBS a few years back. I noticed that if I buy one size up, it drastically helps. And it typically takes a few hours before the painful extreme bloating starts to develop. Once I change out of the pants and put a dress on, the bloating is almost back non-existent within a half hour to an hour. Definitely worse when sitting down or after eating. Seems that my stomach naturally gets slightly bigger after every meal. I prefer to wear a dress when traveling in a car for a long time, or open up the buttons on my jeans whenever sitting. Have to wear a longer shirt to cover it. The only leggings I can wear is if they are very loose on the waist, one or 2 sizes larger. I did have a colonoscopy and an endoscopy about 1 year ago. Nothing abnormal was found. Has anyone come up with any other suggestions to cope with this?

Your message just came through to my email address. I was so excited to see you're EXACTLY like me. 😀

Rjaj profile image

Now we need to let each other know if we come up with any new ways to manage this. In the summer it is mostly fine because I mainly wear dresses. However, winter will be approaching soon enough and it is much more difficult due to the cold. Can only wear the pants that are loose, and hope they don't fall down. 😄 Plus all my pants are a little more snug already from gaining COVID-15. 😉 I wear thigh high's instead of regular pantyhose also. That helps!

I do the opposite. I was low cut trousers and as I've got bit older also now make them elasticated 😆

Maybe you can find me as I'm in the public domain so we can email things that work. I'm a psychotherapy in market deeping. Initials are JM.

Thats in code in case regulator blots it out

Hi there, I’m so fed up with the same problem re tight clothes on my waist, I’ve just read about ...tight pant syndrome....it fits in with all my problems, pains, constipation, back ache, oh so many things...anyway I just wanted to say my waist problem solver right now is ...I order maternity clothes, I’m awaiting a pair of maternity dungarees...in post, so am hoping that I can wear these with a loose top and not have to worry about the pants falling down. Fingers crossed.
