hi iv seen mention of this.how is it diagnosed? im a long term ibs sufferer. My dr. has never mentioned it or the nutrionist iv seen.
sibo: hi iv seen mention of this.how is it... - IBS Network
sibo
No medic ever mentioned it to me either, it was only when I read about it on here that I asked for a test. Mine was done with a breath test which came back clear. I was pretty glad it did, as treatment consists of a special diet plus lengthy and oft-repeated courses of antibiotics which I didn't fancy at all.
People without ibs can have sibo... which is basically an overload of bacteria in the intestines...but it can also affect your bladder and kidneys. Blood tests, urine tests, and a stool sample for the lab are the most common ways to find a diagnosis...
There would have been no need for your dr to mention this malady because ibs and sibo do not 'normally' go together... One of the first signs that one has sibo is that your urine and or feces smell like ammonia... and not at all 'normal'
Hope this helps. Oh...and as Rosie mentioned... the usual course of treatment is antibiotics (which can also be problematic!) and recommendations of probiotics. And sometimes the sibo diet is also recommended. (its very restrictive, too)
I have had IBS for years but last year started to feel very ill went through a multitude of tests then finally a breath test which found a large amount of bacteria in my small intestine - treated with antibiotics and got rid of that but still have the IBS which I can control quite well with FODMAP diet.
I think I have it but am just living with it rather than approach me gp for support as i think I am seen as a problem ad it is affecting my self esteem
Please see this interview with Dr. Mark Pimentel on Sibo. He has been researching SIBO and IBS for many years. This is very informative.
Hi all I'm convinced I have SIBO after suffering from 12 years of IBS. Does anyone know where I can get the test done in Kent please? I'm willing to pay!
