How can I convince my doctor that I should get antibiotics and antifungals for SIBO with probiotics to replace the gut culture? I was looking into this and some people said it may be a possible cure for IBS.

Hi there fjfj I don’t know if I have so

Open to you in the past but I had/ have Dysbiosis. Bad bacteria took over my gut, I have had the Vancimycin antibiotic and 500 billion strength probiotics, I improved but not nearly enough and ended up having a faeces transplant. One thing is that the bad bacteria thrive on carbohydrates so one needs to get these out of their diet. Also fermented foods are excellent, garlic tablets are good but all this needs to e done for months. It is not easy trying to get the balance back. Wishing you well. Ask for a referral to a gastro specialist it’s worth the cost.

You will never rid it if u keep using the antibiotics? Sibo loves antibiotics! As it what kills all ur stomach bacteria so sibo

And candida can grow!

Go online and read about candida/sibo and u will see.

Yes I rea.ise it ,ills all bacteria then you grow the good bacteria with massive doses of probiotics or ha e a farces transplant

It must be possible to get this on the NHS I believe, as I have heard that some people have been treated for SIBO without going private.

What are garlic tablets?

They won't prescribe anything until you have been tested for SIBO. Your gp can arrange this but it depends how well-informed he/she is. You may need to get your consultant to refer you if your gp isn't great.

GP doesn't know about SIBO tests, will have to ask him again about it and inform him of the H breath test.

Find out as much information about it as you can so that you're well informed before you next see him, then ask if he can look it up as you think it would be worth ruling out. A decent gp will be happy to look it up online or in a reference book while you're there (though from experience I realise they aren't all decent!). Be reasonable but persistent if he tries to fob you off. Good luck!

Hi fjfj, my gastroenterologist is very much against antibiotics and so wouldn’t prescribe them. I’ve done over 5 months of the low FODMAP diet which helped a lot - but is difficult to maintain! By the way, I was told to steer clear of PRE-biotics as they are food for bacteria, and so will just aggravate your SIBO. I was diagnosed after having the Hydrogen Breath test, which I’m not sure is available on the NHS.

So after all of that, I was recommended the VSL#3 probiotic, which I’ve been on for about a couple of weeks, and they have been great! You can buy them directly from their website (which is cheaper than amazon!) and I’m able to re-introduce higher FODMAP foods... it’s not perfect but much better than before. I’ve tried supermarket probiotics like yakult and the other yogurt drinks but haven’t seen any results from them. Hope that helps

Yep my gastro told

Me no antibiotic or antifungal will kill it coz it love antibiotics... ur killing ur good gut bacteria so the bad keeps

Growing u need to feed ur gut...

Ie greens, probiotics, digestive enzymes,

NO SUGAR IT LOVES SUGAR! No yeast as it is a yeast overgrowth so ur feeding the yeast. Peppermint oil

And candida tablets u can get in h&b or cytoplan it has all the natural ingredients in that it hate ie cinnamon,peppermint,oregano...

Thank you. Do doctors prescribe any probiotics or are they always self funded?

How did you get to do the H breath test? What's the best way to learn about FODMAP

I paid private as they do not recognise this on nhs and the only way they deal

With it is with antifungal or antibiotics which is the worse u can do.

U do the diet and supplement for 8 weeks it will go ur kill it...

I did and im fine now plus it has changed my eating habit in general.

And no they do not perscribe probiotics it is not a recognised nhs drug

My GP refused to refer me to a gastro - until I said that I had private medical (which is sad, I but I can understand why)

My gastro recommended that I have the H breath test (which my private medical did cover) however I had to pay for the follow-up consultations myself (the private medical did not consider “dietary advice” to be something that they should cover)

The H test suggested that I had SIBO, the dietitian then gave me a couple of booklets and advice on how I can stick to the diet (it was not easy to begin with).

In parallel I had also requested a dietitian via my GP, hoping that I could get it for free rather than pay for the private option, however it took about 6 months on the waiting list to be seen, so I paid for the private.

In hindsight - the H test was worth it, but I didn’t see any more value in paying for the dietitian advice privately than the same advice given by the NHS (actually, the NHS dietitian was much more helpful) - the only drawback is the waiting time...

So to summarise, chances are you will have to pay for the H test, which I would recommend (or use private medical if you’re fortunate to have it) and then either try and follow the low FODMAP diet yourself (which they don’t recommend) or book an appointment with a dietitian that specialises in it... there are a few apps produced by Monash University that can help with the diet too. The diet generally kicks off with an exclusion and reduction of FODMAPS, followed by a controllers reintroduction - which would then indicate the sort of food products you should avoid, which may be surprising!

What is the low FODMAP diet? Is it effective?

I had sibo/candia it was truely awful and had it for ages before anyone clicked on to what it was and it was antibiotics that gave me it... so i would suggest NO ANTIBIOTICS!!! It what give u sibo...

It kills all ur good bacteria aswell as whatever illness u had in first place to warrant the antibiotics( mine was tooth infection) after two lots i couldnt eat, i couldnt keep food in, i was so sick and felt tough all time.

Then i found put through a nutritionalist friend i had it... she put me on this diet for 8 weeks and i was better within 2 but kept it up for 8 as it can come back.

So it no sugar! No yeast ( as it is a yeast infection

Which loves sugar so basically ur feeding it) i left out gluten and dairy to my choice as my body just wouldnt tolerate it at this time..... plus probiotics! Must must must.... digestive enzymes!! Must!!! Helps u keep food in. Also a tablet called dida!! It has all the natural thing that kill sibo/ candida in one tablet! And peppermint oil capsules....

it truly works but antibiotics and antigungal wont!!!

There is a great site called candida diet... it tell u all the things the sibo hate so just eat loads of it...

Can you use both antibiotics to remove the bad bacteria and simultaneously replace with probiotics?

Lulububs profile image
Lulububs in reply tofjfj

Not really coz ur b putting the probiotics in and then the antibiotics will kill what u put in so it will just erase the good....

Antibiotics are seriously not good for gut problems....

That was from my gastro specialist

fjfj profile image
fjfj in reply toLulububs

Oh, perhaps the course of antibiotics is meant to be before you start taking the probiotics? I will do more research about it.

Lulububs profile image
Lulububs in reply tofjfj

Well when i took antibiotics for a baldder infection not long ago i was told to take probiotic two hours after each antibiotics then at least ur still feeding gut healthy bacteria and it did work i did not get as sick as usually do on them.

Plus i took a digestive enzyme, vitamin c and d, and just ate loads of healthy food that sibo hates that way ur keep it more at bay then if u just took the antibiotics.

Just be really healthy, no sugar, no yeast, no fizzy drink. Loadsa greens and plan fish or meat
