SIBO

Any body with thoughts on a hydrogen positive SIBO result. I dont really want to take another cocktail of antibiotics, and i am on a clean diet with probiotics. I was tested with the breath test and positive, but the sensitivity for these tests is quite low isn't it? I have had IBS digestive issues for almost a year, with constant stomach discomfort, does anybody else have symptoms of abdominal discomfort with SIBO. My stomach just feels as if its inflamed all the time, does not seem to be related to what i eat or BM, but I noticed I have a lot more wind in my sails (ha)

Are you taking SIBO tests under the guidance of a gastroenterlogist? Have you been told that you have any conditions that predisposes you to SIBO and are those conditions being tackled? The SIBO tests aren't accurate and if you don't have a predisposing condition, it is unlikely that you have it.

I have plenty of symptoms, I have been left with IBS and bleeding ulcers, so I had the SIBO test, hydrogen and it tested positive.

Not sure that that answers my questions. I am concerned since I did this under a nutritional therapist and they made me more ill with the SIBO treatments, when in the end the NHS diagnosed me with something else and I am doing much better. These therapists are not doctors and some of their practices leave much to be desired.

I was presented with this handout which shows the root causes of SIBO:

clinicaleducation.org/docum...

On the right hand side you will see the box containing the heading "Aetiology" which actually means 'a set of causes'. I went through this list with my gastroenterologist and I have added comments from my own health perspective.

He said that these areas would be covered by the Small Bowel MRI scan that I had:

• Stasis: dysmotility – not apparent

• Surgery (loops, vagotomy, bariatric) – not apparent

• Short Bowel Syndrome - not apparent

• I also added ileocecal valve (which sits between the small and large intestine) to this list, which my therapist kept going on about. She said that my ileocecal valve was stuck open allowing bacteria from my large intestine to wash back into my small bowel and I'd need to visit an osteopath who practices visceral (organ) manipulation to get them to close it for me (or you can do it yourself via a youtube video). I had to go to another city 1.5 hours away to visit such an osteopath who eventually said he didn't manipulate the ileocecal valve (although a phone call indicated he might), but I had a couple of sessions of him manipulating my intestines because they were stiff. My small bowel MRI showed there was nothing at all wrong with my ileocecal valve - it was closed and showed no inflammation or any abnormality that would cause SIBO.

And now for the rest:

• Achlorhydria – no stomach acid – he said this was highly unlikely and also considering I can experience acid reflux

. I also would have thought a fecal elastase test would show if you aren't breaking down proteins correctly (which require stomach acid for digestion) and mine came back OK.

• Hypochlohydria – low stomach acid – same answer as above – the only real test is a PH test directly into your stomach, but he said they didn't do this any more and home testing is inaccurate

• PPIs – my therapist said that I hadn't been on PPIs long enough to make a difference

• Malnutrition – no

• Collagen vascular disease – immune system inflammation e.g. arthritis – not in my case

• Immune deficiency - unlikely

• Advancing Age – no

• Chronic Pancreatitis – this causes constant abdominal pain/fatty stools - no

. It is interesting that another IBS Network member had responded to Rifaxamin but was also diagnosed with a compromised pancreas.

• Chronic ABX use – no

• IgA Deficiency – my tests show this is normal range

• Coeliac Disease – I had blood tests with the GP and these came back fine

• Crohn’s Disease – I had blood tests with the GP and these came back fine

and colonoscopy was OK

• NASH – non alcoholic fatty liver disease –looked at my records for this and this is normal

• Cirrhosis - no

• Fibromyalgia – widespread pain - no

• Rosacea – no

I don't know whether this list helps at all, but might be worth working through from your perspective. If you do have SIBO and the root cause isn't tackled, it will only keep coming back. Good luck.

Wow you are like me so many tests coming up negative, I was put on a toxic drug aimed at teenagers with acne, ie Accutane, I was only on a small dose but I believe that is the staring point of all my gastric problems, at the very least it has messed with my intestinal lining and given me leaky gut or IBS. I have constant 24/7 discomfort and its not like an IBS pain, I had ulcers but they seem to have cleared up. Also mixed and inconsistent BM (bowel motions) but generally not feeling as I used to. This drug has done a number on me in more ways than one and I should never have been prescribed it. I was diagnosed with a fatty liver and even that is strange to me, given i eat well and not overweight. I have had a colonoscopy etc small bowel MRI and all bloods etc for inflammation etc come back fine, so of course we are left with IBS, good old IBS which takes in everything but nothing. But to me its not IBS, as food does not seem to effect things much, ie been on low FodMAP etc. So all very confusing, Im not sure what tests are left, possibly a capsule scope to track the small bowel. Again I think my microbes are messed up. I sent a sample away for a full GI test to a lab in Germany so hopefully that will reveal some problems, as its funny. Before in my life you wanted an all clear on tests, now you get to a stage you want them to fine something that might be out of whack so you can set about fixing rather than the usual its all in your head, I know my problems are not anxiety driven, they are driven by digestive discomfort...

xjrs in reply to Ruggerhead

I had a microbial test on my stools. It came back with a dominance of Citrobacter Freundii, which is a bad bug. It produces a by product (hydrogen sulfide) which can cause pain. I've also been on a microbiome course recently and high protein/low carb diets can cause an increase in bugs that produce hydrogen sulfide. The crazy thing is, part of the treatment for SIBO is a high protein, low carb diet! The increase in hydrogen sulfide can also compromise the gut lining.

The problem is, to treat Citrobacter Freundii, I took an antibiotic and it didn't help. After taking antibiotics your gut can return to its previous state including the bad bug. The best way to shift the microbiome is via a strong probiotic - I take Alflorex and it has changed my life - the pain is gone.

In retrospect I would not have gone ahead with the microbial tests. Most people will have bad bugs in their system to one degree or another. It's a case of whether they have enough of the good bugs to keep them under control. They will see a bad bug on their report and think - oh, I need antibiotics or natural antimicrobials - but they upset your good bugs too. Instead my starting point would be trying something like Alforex to see if it shifts the balance - although not cheap - it's a hell of a lot cheaper than those stupid tests that get you on a road to no where.

There is a good infographic from scientists on this here:

gutmicrobiotaforhealth.com/....

Catatvet05 profile image
Catatvet05 in reply to xjrs

With the Alforex I was fine up to 20 days and then I started to get seriously bad acid reflux. As soon as I stopped my reflux symptoms died down.

I do wonder if that was a good sign - to get through the bad period in order to get to a good stage?

Sound familiar? Or is it just me?

I’m not sure what is going on with my system but I haven’t had much luck with many products including reflux medication and probiotics.

xjrs profile image
xjrs in reply to Catatvet05

Hard to say. Did you contact the Precision Biotics support team to get some advice? Healthline says that probiotics can cause a temporary increase in gas for a few weeks (which I'm guessing might contribute to weakening the stomach valve causing reflux).

Catatvet05 profile image
Catatvet05 in reply to xjrs

I didn’t have gas issues at the time just that I couldn’t stop burping. 💁🏻‍♀️

xjrs profile image
xjrs in reply to Catatvet05

Burping is to do with upper gastro intestinal gas isn't it? That is the one that's going to keep opening up your stomach valve to relieve it??

Catatvet05 profile image
Catatvet05 in reply to xjrs

I suspect so? My symptoms are varied and can suffer with chest pains and bloating, etc.

From what my ph test confirmed everything is fine including my valve, I think. The nurse explained that one patient had acid reflux and didn’t even need to register it on the ph test. The ph test confirmed I don’t have reflux. It’s all done to hypersensitivity, which I think is bull to be honest. The Amitriptyline did not work for me!

I believe it’s all been down to h pylori and I’m gutted it was missed some years ago.

xjrs profile image
xjrs in reply to Catatvet05

Right. I see now. It's the functional aspect of it i.e. throat experiencing pain with a normal level of acid. Shame about the Amitriptyline.

Catatvet05 profile image
Catatvet05 in reply to xjrs

Yes the consultant explained about the throat region - why drugs weren’t working and that my anxiety was the course for my nerve to be unbalanced. Acid level was fine. Would it not confirm valve? I’m sure it did? Waste of time otherwise.

For a short while I was experiencing sore throat quite a lot but it has subsided. And my chest pain is not as intense as it used to be, but it comes when I’m stressed. Could of been the Amitriptyline that subsided it? The drug was pretty awful- the adverse affects I could not tolerated and after several months I came off it. Doctor put my symptoms down to be an anxious person! Ha!

xjrs profile image
xjrs in reply to Catatvet05

Potentially the Amitriptyline has helped. I understand that being on it for 6-12 months can help the pain control neurons, which have been worn down by stress, in the brain to regenerate. I couldn't tolerate 1 tablet (it gave me heart palpitations), so it was good you managed several months. Unfortunately some people can tolerate nerve pain agents and some can't. In some people they are a bit of a blunt instrument since they affect the whole nervous system, not just one part. I also tried gabapentin at low dose and I had side effects (stabbing stomach pain) up to 3 months from stopping. A lot more research is needed into pain control.

Catatvet05 profile image
Catatvet05 in reply to xjrs

I think Amitriptyline should not be offered. And yes some can tolerate it - don’t know how?? A friend of mine takes 100mg I couldn’t tolerate 30mg!

I’m surprised to hear that ph tests are no longer available? I had a PH test done last year. 💁🏻‍♀️

xjrs profile image
xjrs in reply to Catatvet05

You must have been lucky. Maybe it is to do with where you live. It is what my gastro said, but it might be down to local health authority policy.

Catatvet05 profile image
Catatvet05 in reply to xjrs

I think quite possibly it maybe only at critical stage? I first had a consultation with a gastric specialist and we discussed my symptoms- he suspected functional heartburn and wanted me to take the ph test to confirm it. My ph test was clear which is a relief, I guess?

But I keep wondering if I have low stomach acid? H Pylori can lower stomach acid over time. And it could take another year or so to fully recover. Honestly cannot not wait another year - my teeth have suffered badly as a result.

It could possibly be my area or policy as you said. I would ask your gp if you can get a referral to see another gastric specialist - see what he/she says?

You stomach seems under control by the sounds of what you have said, which is great.

xjrs profile image
xjrs in reply to Catatvet05

I'm assuming if he said your PH test was clear, that would mean that your stomach contains a normal level of acid? The sooner researchers can get their heads around the varying symptoms that people have to do with their IBS/GERD and how to go about correcting it, all the better. We are all becoming our own research team and sometimes it's like stabbing in the dark to see what helps.

Catatvet05 profile image
Catatvet05 in reply to xjrs

I couldn’t agree more. I was so sure it was bacteria infection. I guess we have the time but then doctors could try to go all out rather than basic procedures. Many times doctors told me nothing else they can do and when my infection was confirmed I asked we it hadn’t come up before? I was unlucky- doctors words!

I think Antibiotics for SIBO ( if there is such a thing), is probably counter productive, yes it might kill unwanted bacteria, but logically it would kill the good as well?.

While SIBO is supposed to be an imbalance of the good V bad bacteria we all need bacteria to be healthy .

Taking a Probiotic to supplement 'imbalances', sound like a good idea, unfortunately our bodies are a lot more complicated than science fully understands, and it is not as simple as just taking a capsule.

Our Gut health is governed by so many factors right from when we are born ( and how and where) and whether we are breast fed or not, to our lifestyles, our genes and much more.

You mention a 'Clean Diet', this sounds ideal, but the ideal isn't necessarily the ideal for you. Not every animal or species of animal can thrive on the same diet, if for example you are taking mainly plant diet, but your body is more geared for meat, then you would expect difficulties with digestion.

The 'Clean Diet', you mention may contain certain things that you are intolerant to, or maybe pesticides or other chemicals are present. Even too much or too little fibre or an imbalance of fibre types can cause problems.

I guess what i am saying is ,it is not Simple and there is not a simple answer.

Have you thought of the possibility it could be your diet or even the probiotics? I personally have taken probiotics with disasterous effects, i wrote to the company ( as they made me ill), and they came back with some story about it killing the bad bacteria so i was getting side effects ( or something like that, really; how convienient !). Maybe you have taken the diet on too fast instead of introducing your body to it gradually.

I could go on with possible reasons, but there are too many to mention.

Sorry if all that seems too pessimistic, but i see far too many posts and adverts saying Take this and you will be cured, or "don't eat this or that", everyone is different.

Have you have a calprotectin test? This tests inflammation in the gut? A high score can test for UC and Crohns. An indeterminate score, mine was 432 indicates dysbiosis and I successfully brought mine down.

Have you had a decal elastase test? This tests pancreatic function and will show if your pancreatic enzymes are low. If they are you will be unable to digest your food properly, however healthy it is, and this can cause pain and inflammation.

Low stomach acid or no stomach acid can cause the same symptoms as high stomach acid so that is more problematic. Have you had your B12 checked? Low B12 which is not a dietary deficiency is most often caused by Pernicious Anaemia. An outcome of PA is low stomach acid since your immune system attacks the parietal cells in your stomach which makes acid which helps you digest food and kill the bacteria W hi ch naturally resides on the food itself.

Another test is a serum gastrin test. This blood test indirectly associates with low stomach acid.

I have had them all do I understand what they measure. I have also had the capsule endoscopy where you swallow a tiny camera and poop it out. Despite all of my pain and terrible digestion my ‘tight teurns’ were good and there was no damage.

Good luck.

Thanks Martin, yes had the cal proctein etc so all actual inflammatory markers are normal, but when i push on my stomach I know its inflamed. As its quite tender all the time, the only time it feels alright is in the morning. Its a dull ache that is hard to pin down, sometimes in the middle around the belly button and at other times lower down, never cramping but sometimes sharp. I have been this way for months, no relief when i have a Bowel movement, its as if its a low grade inflammation all the time. I am interested in the pancreas test, how do i get that done is it a blood test? As I wonder about that. I have had constipation on an off, but at the moment that seems ok. My pain does not seem to be directed at any food or drink, ie food does not seem to make it better or worse, and I am not having to run to the toilet after meals, so I wonder if it is even IBS. I did test positive for SIBO, but not sure i place much faith in that. I did have a stomach ulcer and quite a long period on PPIs (4 months) as well as SSRIs (an antidepressant they use for IBS) but Im not sure they were not adding to the problem. I would like to get the capsule just to check out my small bowel. MRI was clear as was colonoscopy which presumably would have shown Chrons or UC. So some damage but just not sure how oe why, not sure how i check if my intestines are healthy? Ie that there is no cell damage or permeability issues leading to leaky Gut, SIBO etc. I have sent a stool sample to get checked for microbial health, fungi etc.

in reply to Ruggerhead

Given the location of your pain, and I’m no medical expert, and given a lack of inflammatory markers. I would firstly have a fecal elastase test done. Your GP can arrange it although mine had no idea on what the results meant, my gastro had to do that. Fecal elastase will show if your pancreas is producing enzymes. It is a simple poop tests and the results are highly accurate. You could also have amylase and lipase bloods tested. These also look at pancreatic function but are less instructive although very useful. Lastly I would want a MRCP which looks at your biliary tree so including your pancreatic ducts. I paid to have mine done given the reluctance for diagnostics at the current time. If you are able to spend the money it is about 350£ through National MRI scans.

Another thing you could try if you want would be Atrantil, which is intended to treat SIBO. Like probiotics it seems to help some people and not others and isn't cheap. I found that over the course of a month or so's treatment it helped me a bit but not dramatically, where probiotics hadn't helped me at all. My condition gradually improved a great deal in the months following but that may have been due to other things I was doing. My gastro specialist was sure I had IBS and not SIBO, but I thought I'd give it a try anyhow. Best of luck with finding answers and restoring your health.

Ruggerhead profile image
Ruggerhead in reply to Iesgobdafydd

Thanks for that, I must look it up, how did you find out you had SIBO? what caused it and what else did you do. Did you have stomach discomfort, I have it constantly, 24/7. If i push my tummy its always tender like its inflamed yet its not according to bloods etc. I am told its all in my head but its not, I wasn't concerned about it at the start so no need to create something out of the blue.

Iesgobdafydd profile image
Iesgobdafydd in reply to Ruggerhead

I didn't know I did have SIBO, I just knew it was something people say is mistaken for IBS sometimes and I'd been diagnosed with IBS. I still don't know I had SIBO, and never had any breath test for it though I wanted to have one but the NHS doesn't do them, I think I was told because they're not reliable. Even though the doctors didn't think I had SIBO, they were willing to give me the antibiotics they'd have used to treat it if I had it, and I took them and they didn't help at all. This was before I tried the Atrantil.

Regarding the stomach discomfort, it's hard to remember clearly as I had so many symptoms over such a long time, I definitely sometimes had a tender stomach but I don't think it was as constant over a long period as it sounds like yours is. But it wasn't cramps or spasms like a lot of people with IBS talk about having. A lot of the time it might have been in mild discomfort but it wasn't strong enough to come through as pain, more like lack of desire to eat. I can belch at will which helps reduce pressure so that may have helped. I didn't have much in the way of either diarrhoea or constipation either, which made it hard to believe the doctor that I had IBS and not something different.

Saying it's all in your head is such a lame duckout when they can't figure out what's wrong! I hate that. I'm sure whatever you have is real, and not in your head. There was a research study of IBS patients where they sent inflatable balloons down into their digestive tracts and inflated them and observed that they were more sensitive to pain than people without IBS, their conclusion was that people with IBS are over-reacting inappropriately to pain (not consciously, but that their gut nerves are). That might be true in some cases, but I think it's a pretty weak conclusion. Pain is the body's signal that something is wrong, and there can be things that are wrong without inflammation. If an area of the gut is already taut because of pressure from gas or other causes, and a balloon pushes on it, then it is likely to hurt more than if a healthy, non-gassy gut gets pushed on by a balloon inflated the same amount, that's just common sense - there's a certain amount of natural give, and when things get pushed past that then they start to hurt.

I believe my IBS was caused by TMJD, which was caused by dental injury initially and had been getting gradually worse over years. The connective tissue all round my body was eventually distorted enough that it was reducing fluid circulation in some areas, and causing pressure and discomfort in my gut and various other places. I'm still working hard on trying to fix the TMJD and still have pain and fatigue from it, but although I get very occasional brief discomfort in my gut from it, IBS is essentially a thing of the past for me and I can eat whatever I want.

Catatvet05 profile image
Catatvet05 in reply to Iesgobdafydd

Wow from your jaw. How did you over come the symptoms?

Iesgobdafydd profile image
Iesgobdafydd in reply to Catatvet05

The IBS cleared up, either because of the long-term effect of having taken the Atrantil, or because of the work I was doing on my connective tissue; some of the dry skin has cleared up, and the oedema I was getting. The fatigue and discomfort from the TMJD isn't cleared up yet nor is the TMJD itself, what I am doing for that is working particular muscles to pull on connective tissue wherever I can feel it is too tight and creating discomfort; it took a certain amount of work on awareness of my inner sensations, and experimentation, to figure this out but I've been doing it long enough now that it's always obvious what needs doing. I think from the sensations that slow progress is being made and hope eventually it will be all cleared up but it seems a very long process.

Could be both? When you mean excises does that involve breathing treatments or yogo?

Iesgobdafydd profile image
Iesgobdafydd in reply to Catatvet05

Yes could be both things helped fix the IBS. No what I do isn't about breathing, it's about contracting muscles, it's like I feel where is the discomfort inside me and then what I used to do (before it got to be almost automatic) was to kind of try and push on the place that was numb or uncomfortable, imagine squeezing or pushing at the tight area. My conscious mind doesn't know how to reach the muscles near that place - we have so many muscles and a lot of them we don't normally use with our conscious mind, but my unconscious mind knows exactly how to signal to every muscle in my body, and it seems like we can send it messages about what we want done with that control and it picks them up. And doing that gets easier with practice, just like when people learn to do things like tying shoelaces with their toes or when my mother was a kid she spent a lot of time in front of the mirror practising sneering, and she could make the most amazing sneer any time she wanted, putting a big hump in the curve of her upper lip. I have no conscious control at all of the muscles that do that. So that's not the kind of yoga exercises they teach you in yoga classes, but maybe it's a kind of yoga, I don't know.

Catatvet05 profile image
Catatvet05 in reply to Iesgobdafydd

What’s interesting about pushing our muscles is over time can be fixed, naturally. In particular, if you have a headache pressing your hand between your thumb and finger helps to ease it. It’s finding the spot! Understanding how your muscles connect, etc. I’ve been doing breathing excises in hope of possible closing my throat valve or calming my nerves through out my body - I suffer with anxiety. It’s been 6-7 weeks not noticeable results 💁🏻‍♀️

Iesgobdafydd profile image
Iesgobdafydd in reply to Catatvet05

There are a lot of different things to try for anxiety, if the breathing exercises aren't helping maybe it's time to try something new either instead or as well. I also found it helpful reading about how anxiety happens in our bodies and brains especially reading that there is a brief window of time after we see or hear or think something frightening where we have a chance to reassure ourselves that actually we aren't in a fight-or-flight situation. If we can do that successfully we calm down and are less likely to overreact to similar things next time.

Long enough. I followed my homeopath's instructions to the letter, and kept trying for years.

Catatvet05 profile image
Catatvet05 in reply to Iesgobdafydd

Omg you had it for years? I feel your pain! Because my results are not true to reflux they are not taking my symptoms seriously even when I’m telling them my dentist is concerned for me teeth. Because my ph levels were normal they couldn’t see how it was.

Catatvet05 profile image
Catatvet05

I suffer with al sorts of reflux symptoms including cramps in my stomach. Only tests I’ve taken is an endoscopy, PH test , stool and mouth swap, and tons of medication to treat my symptoms, and none of it worked at all.

After numerous tests some came back clear aside from my mouth and stool (after 4 attempts!) Mouth has bugs (doesn’t need to be treated according to doctor). My stool confirmed H pylori this August and wonder to this day if it was missed the first few attempts back in 2018? I also had an endoscopy.

I asked my doctor if I could try a SIBO test- she never heard of it?! Unless I didn’t pronounce it correctly?

I constantly have an acidic mouth and burping all the time - I am started to get gassy lately since my diet has completely eliminated any diary, wheat or carbs! I eat complex carbs. I cannot tolerate rice, potatoes and good fats like avocados, peanuts; also cut down a lot of sugar and starchy foods. Even with the new diet I’m still struggling.

I should add that when I had the endoscopy they did find Candidas in my throat area - possibly from my inhaler?!

I’m currently on homeopathy treatment and the reason I am is because a lot of the drugs I’ve have not worked or have worsened my reflux. It’s just tiny pills that you suck on - the process has been very slow but it’s understandable, I hope!

I’ve taken many different types of probiotics including Alforex and after 20 days my reflux worsened! Not sure if it was a good sign? They say you got to get through tough stages to then get better?

Iesgobdafydd profile image
Iesgobdafydd in reply to Catatvet05

I tried homeopathy for a variety of things over a long period before getting IBS - we had friends who were qualified conventional medical doctors and also practising homeopaths who got us interested - and I've reluctantly concluded it's quackery. There was one time I thought it might have helped me with one problem, but it could be it was either coincidence or the placebo effect; none of the other homeopathic remedies I was given ever produced a noticable effect. I totally empathize with your reluctance to try more aggressive medicines when ones you've tried have actually made things worse in the past, I just don't think the homeopathy is going to do anything for you. I hope you can find something that helps, that much reflux sounds horrible.

Catatvet05 profile image
Catatvet05 in reply to Iesgobdafydd

I’ve been using homeopathy treatment for 5 weeks now and have not seen any results - it’s not cheap either! There are little pills that you suck on and another Is a spray. I’ve changed course of pills to see if that works. Apparently it takes time?

My friend recommended me to homeopathy treatment and says it has worked for her; in order for it to work I must believe in the treatment. I said I shouldn’t have to believe it should just work! 😆 I’m wondering if it will work but I’m trying so much to get rid of the reflux I might as well keep going?

If all fails then I’m not sure what else to do? Nothing, no medication or treatments seems to work which is frustrating.

You say you tried homeopathy before you got IBS? What was the course? The one homeopathy pill that does work for me is for stomach pains - better and much quicker than a pain killer!

Iesgobdafydd profile image
Iesgobdafydd in reply to Catatvet05

If it fails then keep reading and looking for answers, there are so many possible answers out there and there is probably something that will work for you if you can only find it. It took me a few years to stumble across the ideas that helped me.

If you have to believe in homeopathy for it to work then that is the placebo effect doing the job and not the particular remedy itself.

It was quite a while back now I was using homeopathy and I can't recall all the different ones I tried for myself or my children, I used to have a whole stack of the little plastic bags they came in and many were different ones. I remember there was one she gave me a couple times for liver function. I was getting repeated episodes of mastitis and plugged ducts, also thrush. I remember she gave us remedies for jetlag when we travelled, which did nothing. I forget what she treated the children for. As I said, there was almost never any improvement that might have been caused by the homeopathic remedies, there was just one occasion where there might have been but it could be it was coincidence or placebo effect.

But if it helps you with stomach pains that's great! Even if it's actually the placebo effect doing it, who cares as long as it works for you.

Catatvet05 profile image

I agree that having to believe is a placebo but the pill for my stomach pains definitely isn’t.

I’ve searched many things and am looking into muscle alignment treatment- like a sports massage but directly for reflux- could be do with my neck?

It all happened when my dad died hence why doctors believe it’s functional heartburn. But h pylori and Candidas I believe is the cause of my reflux as a result of stress and dieting. Apparently it can take several years for the reflux symptoms to die down after triple therapy treatment.

It’s been a few weeks and nothings changed. I tempted to cancel my third consultation with the homeopathy specialist.

Hi there, which brand did you use?

LeiL profile image
LeiL in reply to Catatvet05

Organic India. You can use the “ Tulsi Cleanse” or any of the their Tulsi. I don’t use the “Rose Tulsi” because it contains stevia which I’m sensitive. I really can’t believe how well it worked.

Wow! I’m really keen to get this! 😅 it works for a lot if things such as improve inflammatory symptoms, stress, blood pressure- excellent! Thank you a lot!! How long until you saw improvement by the way?

You won’t believe this. My symptoms were cut 75% within 3 days and 99% within a few weeks. I started taking it in October. I had a Bravo Ph test (72 hr monitoring) scheduled for 2 Nov and went ahead with the scheduled procedure. It was negative for acid reflux. Previously, In Sep I had a Barrium Swallow and another radiology procedure which showed instantaneous reflux. This week had a follow-up with Gastro (IBS Specialty)on test results and told her I wasn’t surprised at the results given how well the Tulsi worked.

The Naturopath ordered a stool test through Vibrant Wellness to test for things and the results were o some interest. Bottom line—-take a probiotic with limited strains and it identified the strains.

With the ph test did you drink liquid? I think that might have been the barium test followed by the 24 hour ph monitor - came back fine. So you never had reflux? It’s no surprise then that the tea worked! Really great that you have comprehensive tests. My tests keep coming back clear and so they keep pushing me for anxiety meds. I was eventually put on Amitriptyline- load of shit! the HP still is the problem although clear. I want to try Betaine supplement

Oh, yes I had reflux—bad. Willing to share the report from John Hopkins. Yes, I consumed a sugary liquid, and they used radiology to determine how fast I refluxed. it was less than 3 seconds. Based on that they ordered ANOTHER endoscopy, biopsy, and ph monitoring insertion which couldn’t occur for 8 weeks due to COVID. I was also required to get COVID tested before the procedure. I was miserable and sought other remedies which one was the Tulsi. After the Ph monitoring they determined my reflux was normal not due to esophageal issues that must be corrected by surgery. They recommended over the counter medication as needed, but I’m sticking with the Tulsi.

Catatvet05 in reply to LeiL

Thank god you didn’t need surgery! How long was your symptoms? Can’t believe I’ve suffered for 3 years - my poor teeth 🥲 ruined. I really can’t remember what was in the drink I think it was just water infact I don’t think it was the procedure you had? Sounds to me tests were not as reliable the first time? My doc been tight with referral- supposedly she made another one and still have not heard anything since October!

Last year in April 19, I started consuming protein shakes and went on a low carb diet. Noticed the belching then but true GERD started January 20. By Mar the pain was so bad I thought I had SIBO or IBS. Given medication for both. Probiotics prescribed which I couldn’t take. Even tried fermented foods such as Sauerkraut. Symptoms returned.

Catatvet05 profile image
Catatvet05 in reply to LeiL

Protein shakes can do that to you, I’ve known someone else who had it as a result of the protein shakes. Was it all down to h pylori though ? Sounds like- the pain?

LeiL profile image
LeiL in reply to Catatvet05

I self treated for h.pylori with some herbs—-we were on lockdown so couldn’t see a regular doctor for a while. I’ve had h.pylori twice before and also a GIST tumor in the stomach. That’s the reason for doing the biopsies.

Catatvet05 profile image
Catatvet05 in reply to LeiL

I see that’s why you were seen quickly. I was actually reading GIST today.

This won’t hurt your purse either. a box of tea was $5.00. I consumed it twice a day. The recommendation was to use the Cleanse once a day and then one of the other Tulsi once a day. Now i only use the cleanse once a week.

😊 amazing! Let’s see if it works for me 😅 do I need another Tusli or is the cleanser enough?

LeiL profile image
LeiL in reply to Catatvet05

Look at the ingredients on the Liver Cleanse box. Some are quite strong. It’s also used to cleanse the liver. I would recommend the Ginger Tulsi or the Original Tulsi for general consumption. The Tulsi Sleep was recommended to me but it also contains stevia.

Catatvet05 profile image
Catatvet05 in reply to LeiL

To confirm you drank the Liver Cleanser and the original once a day? I am looking at the original one as the one that will help with my reflux?! Ginger as a tea makes me burp. How long for by the way?

LeiL profile image
LeiL in reply to Catatvet05

Yes, I did the cleanser in the morning, you might want to consider it after lunch or dinner. I was cautious and didn’t want sleep disturbance but it now helps me sleeps and calms me down. I would recommend the Cleanse, the original, and the sleep if you have no problems with any of the ingredients.

I’m sensitive to most things. I know this sounds silly to most people but My teeth have badly suffered and doctors don’t understand why since my ph test can back fine - I said I’m constantly burping and that acid is coming all the time especially when I’m laying down or after meal time. I’m baffled myself why it can’t get it resolved- it’s knocked my confidence.

At this point I will try anything .

Another point is that nothing has worked reason why consultant assume anxiety- I wish I hadn’t said anything about it. I should of had more tests done, really .

At least you didn’t have the reflux for too long. My uncle has had it for 10 years! His got hernia and ulcers which I believe is the cause?

By the way they do supplements as well. Is it worth trying that?

I purchased the Holy Basil and Rhodiola Supplements but just prefer the tea. I guess because it is soothing and warm.

My local shop I believe sells the plan one - could I not just drink that or will it not be as effective?

LeiL profile image
LeiL in reply to Catatvet05

I say give the Original Tulsi a try and see what happens. At least it is not a great expense. The Tulsi Cleanse is EXTREMELY bitter and maybe that is why it works. I don’t use sugar or any kind of sweetener.

Catatvet05 profile image
Catatvet05 in reply to LeiL

Maybe it’s the cleanser that worked? I will try the powder version of the original product- I’m also considering Betaine? Has that worked for you? Digestive supplements hasn’t for but Betaine is more for breaking down proteins; since I can’t break down foods and always burp and acid come up maybe it will help? I don’t think the cleanser is available in the uk but the supplements are. I don’t have kidney issues though so not sure how this would work for me?

I have read that these breath tests often give false positives so I feel the same way you do. I also think I have classic symptoms of SIBO, so don't really know what options I have.

Eliz what are your main symptoms, have you looked at a GI test just to see what your microbes are doing?

LeiL profile image
LeiL in reply to Ruggerhead

I did this, just got the results on Friday. Below are recommendations from a different practitioner published on the web.

Holy basil (tulsi): This little guy works hard to reduce bloating and gas.

Turkey tail: I often give this adaptogenic mushroom to my patients who are battling gut overgrowths like SIBO or candida.

Licorice root: This has been used for years as a common remedy to help heal leaky gut syndrome since it's both soothing and anti-inflammatory.

Not yet. I have non responsive celiac disease so I can't eat gluten but still get the symptoms of eating it, which are diarrhea and bloating etc, IBS. However about a year ago I started burping constantly and things have gotten worse. I plan on going to a GI in the spring if l can find one who listens. Right now the weather is very unpredictable and I don't want to get caught in a blizzard.

I had constant burping—100 times a day and also silent flatulence also about 100 times a day. The Tulsi Tea worked. See my responses above.
