Having a stress day

I have been doing FODMAP for 2 1/2 weeks now, but am having a very stressful day today and have eaten 3 chocolates as it is someone's birthday at work. Please tell me I haven't undone all the good work that I have done for the last 2 1/2 weeks.

Is chocolate even a FODMAP?

The milk in milk chocolate will contain lactose, but only in pretty small amounts. I reckon that three chocolates (I'm thinking box type chocolates) shouldn't crash things.

FODMAPs isn't an all or nothing proposition, it's a question of degree. There are fermentable carbs in many foods, the trick is keeping the quantities below a certain threshold.

At the end of the day, don't stress too much. That's just as bad!

Plan a meal for tonight that you know is FODMAP free. I hope tomorrow is less stressful.

No, of course you haven't. When I was doing FODMAPs, in its very tough, initial stages I often ate the odd banned item(s). A small amount won't do much harm and, even if you ever decide to really over indulge, the worst that can happen is a brief return to IBS symptoms. Remember, the purpose of these first few weeks is just to clear your system of the usual suspects so you can get a handle on which foods upset you.

Please can somebody tell me about the. fodmap diet?

in reply toTummypain

Go to the website for Monash University where the diet was, and still is, being developed. You can read all about it there and also download a smartphone app which is very helpful. There's an excellent book about FODMAPs by Patsy Catsos called, 'IBS - Free At Last' which explains what to do step-by-step. Be very wary of any other other websites/ books purporting to explain the diet as some of them contain some really duff info and are often outdated to boot.
