I just seem to get it for no reason. It's like I can never find out what helps it and never find out what makes it worse. I hardly see any pattern when I do a diary...

For me this is quite the norm for IBS-totally unpredictable- i have had it for years, after various exclusion diets etc I am aware of some things that are definitely no go. but generally speaking,it is for me unpredictable too.Don't know whether this helps.
If you've got the D variety of IBS, you could try talking to your GP about Bile Acid Malabsorption/Disorder. There's a test for it (SeHCAT), but as it has to be done at a specialist hospital, my doctor decided to let me do a trial by treatment (colestyramine) instead and it seems to be working very well - especially now I've got the dosage sussed. Apparently it's the cause of IBS-D symptoms in more than 50% of patients, but is still under-recognised even by gastroenterologists.

Hi pagan moon, that is fantastic news!
I'm pretty sure it was you who posted the link to the article about BAD (BAM) on here, am I right? If so, thank you very much indeed as, after reading it, I followed it up with my GP and things took the course outlined above.
