Hi have been suffering with ibs for a year or two and find my bloating and constipation symptoms are getting worse. I have been told that exercise can help but been a girl of slim frame I don't want to over do the exercise and lose weight.

WHAT EXERCISE WOULD YOU RECOMMEND??

many thanks any help would be appreciated :-)

The idea of exercise seems to be to get the gut active and moving . So a brisk half hour walk every day vigorous housework ,gardening ,swimming regularly I don't think gym work or a training regime is necessary really but just activity that gets the system going .keep the old carbs up as excercise burns carbs and thus weight loss if not eating enough carbs Personally ,being an OAP the idea of going to a gym ,something I have not done since I was in my 20s when Played a lot of sport does not appeal . Now walking and gardening and staying active and avoiding slumping in front of the telly too much is where I am .If I was young running and sport might what I would do . Everyone to there own .

Yoga, especially Iyengar.

When I was really ill I bought a yoga DVD and practised in my lounge - you can't go wrong with Yoga in my opinion - it's relaxing and toning. It's just having access to space and setting the time aside.

Cheers,

Hello I would also recommend yoga, big only does it help you move a bit but it also encourages you to breathe differently which helps you relax, I often find that I can get some relief from my IBS c after a short session it not only helps with the constipation but also can help minimize the pain.

Good luck.

Hi I'd say yoga too or walking both will de-stress you and help your digestive system work well. Also maybe swimming?

I found pilates to be really helpful and due to the focus and isolation of different muscle groups, it gave me a greater awareness of where any ibs pain was coming from which made it easier to lock down the pain when it came. Core exercise is really good for activating and releasing the muscles around your colon so can help with ibs cand getting things moving again.

Deep breathing exercises would definitely help and also being aware of your posture

(desk workers have real digestive problems because of the constant bending over). Also massage castor oil onto your abdomen and lie with a hot water bottle on top for about 20 minutes.

thank you all for your great advise.. I am going to look into joining some form of gym where I can complete some general fitness building and yoga/Pilates classes.
