Hello all, well finally going to get something done, not a colonoscopy but a sigmoidoscopy.
Has anyone had one? Does it hurt? Do you have to go through the colon cleanse like with a colonoscopy?

Thank you Kerrym212. Glad something is actually being done now.
Hi Bunnyrabbit1
I had a sigmoidoscopy two years ago. I had to two special drinks the day before (didn't taste too bad) to cleanse the colon. Have to admit I was terrified but there was nothing to worry about. Wasn't painful just a little uncomfortable but was over quickly and the nursing staff were all great putting my nerves at ease!
Good luck
Claire6, thank you for explaining that, hope yours was all ok. Not the most pleasant of procedures but i guess at least you know they are ruling everything out.
Hi Bunnyrabbit1 - I've had both colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy. Neither are painful but you need to have your colon cleaned out before the scope is used otherwise the doctor can't see what's going on. For the colonoscopy you will be given a mild sedation and a painkiller throughout the procedure. You don't need either of these for a sigmoidoscopy. I had the colonoscopy 6 months ago - they found a polyp and removed it. I had a sigmoidoscopy last week - another polyp found and removed (it wasn't there when I had the colonoscopy). I have to have another colonoscopy in a year's time. I'm not nervous to have either of these procedures done now - in fact, I think I'm going to be a frequent flier! So don't worry - it will be over in 20 minutes max!
I have had a Flexible Sigmoidoscopy a little over a week ago when they found one polyp. They didn't remove it at the time because the consultant who did the procedure recommended that I have a colonoscopy to look for more polyps and remove them as well as the one that I already have. To prep for the Flexible Eigmoidosfopy and as they were only going to look at the first part of the colon I had two enemas done st the same time. I had four or five visits to the loo to clean myself out. The procedure itself was painless eccept for the wind afterwards most of which was removed when the procedure was done.
