Flexible Sigmoidoscopy
I did. It was fine. Tho I recently had a colonoscopy with sedation
I had a sigmoidoscopy a few months ago without sedation, I think you should be fine but everyone is different. I had gas & air at the ready if I needed it but to be honest I forgot about it, might have had a drag on it if I'd have remembered it was in my hand. Sigmoidoscopy is over much quicker than a colonoscopy, it's literally a few minutes. The main thing is to relax as much as you can & keep thinking it will be done in a matter of minutes. I found the prep the worst not painful it's just my bowels don't work to order! Good luck & remember to relax.......😊
Yes, it's fine without sedation, just feels a bit strange a times.
I vote sedation and colonoscopy. I did a flex sig and because I am very sensitive to gas pain / bloating / air in the gut I found it quite uncomfortable. I also think the Dr's like sedation as they can just accomplish what is needed faster without the patients "help" or not help in my case. I will say this, at the end of mine there is a reason they wear head to toe protection on the receiving end of that Tunguska level event that came out of me. While I felt bad for the Dr, I also felt like it was unavoidable.
I had a FS in November and opted for no sedation. It was fine, though they did give me the option of gas and air if needed but I forgot about it! To be totally honest, it was fascinating to see my insides on screen and discuss what the endoscopy technician could see. Afterwards they told me it was clear, they even told me that my lower bowel was actually better than the last time I'd had a full colonoscopy as they compared the recent photos with the ones from previously! I was reassured that there was nothing wrong but I was hoping that they could at least explain why I was having so much pain. That was the only downside for me. The worst part of the procedure is actually the bowel prep.
I had one without sedation, it was a bit more uncomfortable than I expected but I was in the middle of an IBS flare-up, so that didn't help. I thought the enema before was the worst part of the procedure as I'd never had one and decided that I really didn't want to go through one ever again! The sigmoidoscopy itself only took a few minutes.
